An In-Depth Best Handheld Showerheads Review for 2020

Best Handheld Showerheads 2020

If you find yourself seeking a new shower for your bathroom, we highly recommend that you consider getting a handheld showerhead.

Handheld showerheads provide the greatest balance between performance and convenience. They give you the flexibility and mobility that traditional fixed showerheads just can’t offer.

Interested? Here’s a comprehensive buying guide containing everything you need to know about getting the best handheld showerhead. Following which we have selected a range of best-rated products for you to pick from.

Buying Guide: How to Choose the Best Handheld Showerheads

Sprayer Face Diameter

Typically, a showerhead with a larger sprayer face diameter (6 inches plus) is more desirable and much more pleasant to shower with. Large-diameter showerheads provide much better coverage, as the water beam can cover more of your body at any given time.

The downside is that if the plumbing system in your house already has lousy water pressure, a showerhead with a large sprayer face diameter and more nozzles can worsen the problem.

Only get a large-size showerhead if you are sure that the water system is up to the task. Otherwise, pick a smaller one.

Docking

The dock (sometimes referred to as the “wall-mount holder” or “shower bracket”) is another vital part of a handheld showerhead. As you will be constantly docking and undocking the showerhead during showers, it should be as durable and stable as possible. Your dock shouldn’t make it difficult for you to adjust the direction of the water spray when you want to. Nor should it fall off the moment you put your showerhead back into place.

The dock is also one of the reasons why we think handheld showerheads are vastly more convenient than fixed ones. You can easily place the handheld spray face back up into the dock and convert it into a wall-mounted showerhead whenever you want to. Conversely, you don’t have the option to take a fixed showerhead off of the wall.

Materials and Finishes

Just like designs, there are plenty of materials and finishing options for you to choose from while picking a new handheld showerhead.

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic and metals like stainless steel and brass are the most common materials for showerheads. But you will find ABS plastic to be the most popular even among higher-end showerheads. ABS as a material is cheap, flexible, non-corrosive, and light. All of these useful properties have made it a premier choice among showerhead manufacturers. Unfortunately, the greatest drawback is that plastic is prone to damage.

Plastic showerheads are often plated with a layer of chrome, so they resemble metal ones. In rare cases, designers will opt for a traditional coating of paint, instead.

As for finishes, you’re not short on options, either. Depending on your personal preference and the decor of your bathroom, you can find showerheads coated with oil-rubbed bronze, brushed/polished nickel, chrome, copper, brass, or regular colored paints.

Flow Rate

Flow rate is crucial because not only does it affect your showering experience, it also has to do with the law. There are federal and state laws regulating the performance of your showerhead.

A technical term that you need to get used to hearing is Gallon Per Minute or GPM. GPM is also more commonly known as “flow rate”. Basically, it is used to indicate how much water (in gallon) flows out of your showerhead every minute. The higher the GPM, the more water your shower will consume in a minute.

The federal government has mandated since 1992 that all showers across the U.S. must limit its flow rate to below 2.5 GPM. In some states, due to a number of reasons such as a lack of water resources, programs to improve water efficiency etc., this limit is even lower.

In California, for example, the limit is 1.8 GPM. California’s dryness makes it vulnerable to droughts, so saving water is crucial for the entire state. In New York and Colorado, the standard flow rate is 2.0 GPM. Both states have been wanting to improve water use efficiency for some time and flow restriction is a good step in reaching that goal.

Spray Settings

Who doesn’t like having a relaxing massage after a long, hard day at work?

This is the reason why spray settings are important to a lot of people when they set out to buy a new showerhead. It can decide whether you’ll have a satisfying shower or not.

For some people, the full-body spray setting is fantastic since it provides maximum coverage and feels like it can cocoon your body in a layer of warm water. For others, though, the pulsating massage feels far better on their sore, stiff muscles after spending hours at work.

But it’s not just about the experience alone, spray settings can also have a dramatic effect on the water pressure. If you have a low-pressure plumbing system, a showerhead that has settings that use fewer nozzles can create a water jet with surprising water pressure.

If you want to get a vast selection, be prepared to shell out some more cash as only expensive models offer a wide range of spray settings. Fortunately for those who are budget-minded, more basic showerheads nowadays still offer up to three or four settings.

Best Handheld Shower Head Reviews

Here are the best handheld showerheads that you should have on your radar if you’re looking for one to equip your bathroom with:

  1. AquaDance 3312: Best to Buy
  2. AquaDance 3370/3328: Best High-Pressure Handheld Showerhead
  3. Briout 8541794725: Best Budget Handheld Showerhead
  4. Moen 26100SRN Magnetix: Best Moen Handheld Showerhead
  5. Delta Faucet 75700 7-Spray: Best Delta Handheld Showerhead

1. AquaDance 3312: Best to Buy 2020

This showerhead maintains an excellent balance between look and functionality. It has a modern and elegant design along with the ability to shower with a wide range of spray settings, making it an attractive choice for many. In fact, its appeal is such that it is currently one of the best-selling showerheads on Amazon’s chart.

AquaDance 3312

Pros

  • Elegant and modern design
  • Various spray settings
  • Excellent Water Saving mode
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Simple set-up
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Relatively small sprayer face
  • Easy to damage ABS parts

The 3312 has a casing made out of ABS plastic and comes with three finishes you can choose from: brushed nickel, traditional chrome-plating, or oil-rubbed bronze. Though the oil-rubbed bronze finish will cost you twice as much as the ordinary version, customers have reported that they loved its fancy feeling and appearance.

The sprayer face diameter is about 3.5 inches, which is quite limited, so the coverage can be disappointing even on full spray.

There are six water spray settings available. With the 3312, you will have Power Rain, Power Mist, Massage, Rain/Massage, Rain/Mist, and Water Saving Pause Mode. All of which can be switched to anytime with the click-level dial on the sprayer.

AquaDance developed the Water Saving Pause Mode very well. Even though this setting visibly cuts down on water usage, it doesn’t feel much different from a regular spray. It’s a win-win: cheaper water bill but still more or less the same shower experience. Another benefit to having this model is that you can use it in RVs and boats as well without having to worry too much about water efficiency.

Setting it up is fairly easy. No special tools are required and the manual covers every step in the installation process. You can get everything up and running by yourself in a matter of minutes.

As for maintenance, since this showerhead features rub-clean jets, it doesn’t require a lot of hands-on cleaning. Rub-clean jets are rubber nozzles specifically designed to be easy to clean. You only need to rub on the nozzles with your fingers or scrub them with a small toothbrush to dislodge mineral deposits inside. This is a huge time-saver because in the past, to clear out the clogs you had to use strong chemicals and soak the showerhead in them overnight.

Lastly, to make the deal even better, the company also offers a limited lifetime warranty for the showerhead.

2. AquaDance 3370/3328: Best High-Pressure Handheld Showerhead

The AquaDance 3370/3328 is a reasonable choice for people who are struggling with a weak plumbing system. This is mainly due to the wide range of spray settings that it can replicate, so it works well with a low water-line pressure plumbing system. The fact that this showerhead’s pressure-boosting modes like Pulsating Massage have managed to lend extra strength to notoriously low-pressure sources, like well water, make it a very popular choice among consumers.

AquaDance 3370/3328

Pros

  • Beautiful design.
  • Multiple finishing options
  • Great combo design
  • Large coverage
  • Wide range of spray settings
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Easy set-up

Cons

  • ABS construction

There are actually two serials for this model of showerhead: The AquaDance 3370 and 3328. The only difference between them is that the 3370 features a 28-inch sliding bar for the handheld. Meanwhile, the fixed showerhead and the handheld are both mounted together on a single bracket with the 3328.

It ultimately depends on how ergonomic you want your shower to be.

As for performance, keep in mind that neither of these is better than each other. Both have an ABS construction that you can beautify with the finishing options (brushed nickel, chrome-plating, oil-rubbed bronze). The combination design naturally makes the entire system twice as heavy as a standard single-head shower. Lessening stress on the shower arm by picking lighter ABS plastic is a wise move design-wise.

Both have good coverage, especially with the huge 7-inch fixed showerhead. Both have six spray settings: Overhead Rainfall, Power Rain, Hydrating Mist, Rain/Mist, Water-saving Pause mode as well as two massaging settings.

The system features a water-dividing knob. Just by turning it, you can divert the water to the main showerhead only, to the handheld or both. However, be aware that water pressure will be lowered for both showerheads if you try to use both at the same time. Unless you have a large water supply line or your plumbing system has high pressure, we recommend that you only use one showerhead at a time.

Because it is a robust system, it will definitely be a little bit more problematic to install. But from our experience, as long as you follow the manual, you’ll finish installation in about fifteen to twenty minutes. There aren’t a lot of special tools required, either, and definitely no plumbers are needed.

The showerhead is also designed to be as low-maintenance as possible with its rub-clean jets. Just like every other AquaDance’s products, the shower is covered by a limited lifetime warranty.

3. Briout 8541794725: Best Budget Handheld Showerhead

The Briout 8541794725 is quite a deal for budget buyers. Though highly affordable (it is one of the most inexpensive showerheads on Amazon’s best-selling chart), its performance is no less respectable.

Briout 8541794725

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Wide range of spray settings
  • Simple set-up
  • Minimal maintenance

Cons

  • Cheap, easy to damage ABS parts

With nearly as wide a range of spray settings as the AquaDance 3370/3328, its low-pressure performance is notable for the price it is marketed at. There are five spray settings that you can choose from with the click-lever dial. Those are Power Mist, Power Rain, Rain Massage, Rain Mist, and Pulsating Massage.

The Briout is constructed from ABS with a plating of chrome, so even without the fancy finishing options that the AquaDance 3312 has, the metallic shimmer still makes it look quite good.

The installation process is fairly straightforward without a lot of complicated steps. There are also no extra parts that you need to study. Instead, if you have an ordinary water hose, you will be able to set it up for your bathroom in mere minutes. But don’t worry too much if you don’t have your own hose, either. The showerhead will also come with a 5-feet. stainless steel hose for you to get started immediately. The brass nuts also help to make it easy to install.

Inside the packaging you will also find a separate dock. The brass swivel ball joint on the dock can be rotated while you’re showering to get the best angle.

Just like the AquaDance 3312, the nozzles are also self-cleaning with rub-clean jets, so, luckily, you won’t be too stressed when it comes to maintenance. They also help to wipe off the toxic mineral deposits accumulating in the showerhead.

The Briout showerhead is covered with a limited lifetime warranty.

4. Moen 26100SRN Magnetix: Best Moen Handheld Showerhead

For the people out there who consider the look of a showerhead to be an important factor in their purchase decision, the Moen 26100SRN is a pretty solid candidate. Moen has gotten the delicate “look – performance” balance down pretty well with this showerhead.

Moen 26100SRN Magnetix

Pros

  • Beautiful look
  • Magnetic dock
  • Wide range of spray settings

Cons

  • Cheap, easy to damage ABS parts
  • Expensive

A lot of customers reported that they bought the showerhead solely because it looks impressive with its sleek, minimalistic, and modern design. But the thing that has really brought out the positive reviews is the surprising performance it has. With the click-lever dial, you can switch between the six spray patterns this showerhead can generate. You have Wide Coverage, Downpour, and a range of massage settings that do the job of stress-relieving quite well.

A novel feature that the 26100SRN has is the magnetic docking. This doesn’t just make it more convenient for you to detach the showerhead since you don’t have to fiddle with it as much as with traditional docks. It also stops the showerhead from splashing water out of the shower, as the magnet will always keep the showerhead facing forward. This is a fault that virtually all non-magnetic showerheads are guilty of, and we’re glad that there’s finally a solution.

One thing about this showerhead’s design though, is that there are plastic parts in spite of the price which makes the showerhead feels flimsier than it should be. We’re uncertain whether it can stand up to the test of time knowing how bad the reputation of ABS is in terms of durability and longevity. But remember that you are covered by the company’s limited lifetime warranty policy, so it is always possible to call them up if you run into problems with the product’s durability.

5. Delta Faucet 75700 7-Spray: Best Delta Handheld Showerhead

Unlike Moen, Delta differentiates itself from the rest of the market by focusing solely on delivering the best performance rather than the best look. The Delta Faucet 75700, while it definitely won’t win any showerhead beauty contests, is a solid showerhead for those who are looking for functionality alone.

Delta Faucet 75700 7-Spray

Pros

  • Wide range of spray settings for the price
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Easy set-up

Cons

  • Mediocre design
  • Small sprayer head
  • Cheap, easy to damage ABS parts

The design is merely average, it will neither attract your eyes, nor will it make you recoil in disgust. This is the kind of showerhead you would expect to see in an ordinary household bathroom. Regardless, the chrome-plating does make it look a little bit more elegant and attractive, but it’s still a long way off from being considered a nice bathroom decorative piece.

True to its name, there are seven spray settings available when you buy this showerhead: Full Body Spray, Wide Full Body Spray, Massaging Spray, Full Body Spray With Massage, Drenching Spray, Energy Saving Spray, and Pause. That’s quite an extensive range of settings right there. Even more surprising is that for having so many settings packed into a single showerhead, the price is very affordable.

However, one problem that we have with this showerhead is the shower face’s diameter is too small for good coverage at about 3.3-inches. It makes the advertised ‘Full Body Spray’ not all that impressive in real life. But other than that, the performance is satisfactory for such a cheap showerhead.

The 75700 is meant to be easy to install. It comes with a manual that, if you follow all of the instructions carefully, you’ll have it up and running in no time at all. As for maintenance, the nozzles are self-cleaning and can also remove mineral deposits with the rub-clean jets, so you don’t need to schedule a thorough deep clean for some time.

The Delta 75700 is covered by a limited lifetime warranty, as well.

Some Great Shower Brands You Should Know

Thinking of doing a little bit more market research before putting your money down for a handheld showerhead but don’t know where to start?

Well, we have a couple of names that you can use to get started.

AquaDance

We’ve talked plenty of AquaDance in the review section. AquaDance is gradually becoming a more popular name in the industry after releasing several showerhead models that a good portion of its customers (80% to 90%) love dearly. As a matter of fact, one of its products— the AquaDance 3312—  is #1 on Amazon’s chart right now. One thing to note though is that if you’re looking for fancier, more high-end showerheads they are not part of the company’s portfolio currently. The majority of AquaDance products seem to be aimed primarily at the general consumer level, not higher.

Delta

While the company is most famed for its faucets and kitchen equipment, it does cover bathroom appliances like showerheads, too. Its showerheads are known for having a cheap price tag and an acceptable level of quality. There have been a few past models that have struggled to get the performance balance right and resulted in mediocre products. But most of the time, fortunately, they hit the sweet spot just right. That’s the reason they have risen to become a huge player in the bathroom equipment industry today.

Moen

Moen has been a long-time player in the industry and has more or less become a household name by now. Known for its aesthetically pleasing but also high-performance designs, the company has gained the trust of thousands of customers. If they have gained yours, there aren’t a lot of reasons for you to stop now.

Speakman

Speakman is literally the original shower equipment-making company. The founders of the company, Allen and Joseph Speakman, are the inventors of the first handheld shower as well as adjustable showerheads. The company has been honoring its great legacy by continuously being one of the chart-topping companies on the market for decades, producing excellent products.

American Standard

American Standard ranked first on the grounds of ‘Brand Familiarity’ among North American households. Their products and logo have both become familiar sights to the majority of us as a reputable bathroom equipment manufacturer. Though they have become less and less popular in recent years due to greater competition from other companies, their products still hold a gravity to them that attracts customers.
