Best HEPA Vacuums 2020

Other than a full-fledged air filtering system, a vacuum cleaner is the next best thing to keep your home’s air quality fresh and bacteria-free. Standard filtering systems can eliminate a diverse range of airborne threats and depending on the material chosen, the  filters can remove fine particle contaminants  like microscopic dust, pollen, dander, pet hair, including invisible bacteria and viruses.

As of the moment, the best vacuum filtering system on the market is the High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter.

In this guide, you will find all there is to know about the best HEPA vacuums and how you can select the best model for you.

What Is a HEPA Vacuum?

Any vacuum cleaner which has a HEPA filter inside is classified as a HEPA vacuum. HEPA filters are the best filters commercially available at the moment. They can eliminate 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 micron,  which is about 250 times smaller than the width of a human hair (for context, a hair’s width is around 75 microns.)

Other than common fine dust, HEPA filters can also take out airborne bacteria and viruses. Researchers have found that HEPA filters are also effective against COVID-19. But be advised that these filters are inside portable air purifiers units. So, it begs the real question: Do HEPA vacuum cleaners work just as well?

Simply put: Yes.

According to the Western Australian Department of Health, a HEPA-fitted vacuum can minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission. But for good measure, rather than relying solely on a HEPA vacuum cleaner for your safety, there are several other precautions you should take. Other measures to maintain sanitation include wiping surfaces with disinfectants and regularly handwashing with soap.

Why Are HEPA Filters So Expensive?

HEPA filters are more expensive compared to conventional foam filters. A conventional foam, fabric, or felt filter costs somewhere between $5 to $10. A standard replacement kit with 3 foam filters and 3 felt filters for Shark’s vacuums only costs $9 is a typical example.

Meanwhile, a HEPA filter can cost twice as much. For example, a HEPA filter from Dyson for the Dyson V11 Torque Drive costs about $55. A replacement HEPA cartridge from Hoover, meanwhile, will cost you about $30

Because HEPA filters are more complex by design, the manufacturing costs are understandably higher. Regardless, for the majority of customers, the filtration efficiency is worth every dime spent, given its reusability and near-lifetime durability. If the price tag makes you feel uneasy, think of  it as a long-term investment in your health rather than a markup, and you’ll find it easier to accept the upfront cost.

How to Pick the Best HEPA Vacuums

Bagged or Bagless?

Bagged Vacuum

As the name suggests, a bagged vacuum deposits all contaminants vacuumed up into a large, disposable dust bag. When the bag fills up, you have to replace it with a new one.

Miele Grey Classic C1 Performance
The disposable dust bag inside of a Miele vacuum

Replacing dust bags is a quick and simple process for most people, though you’ll have to restock new dust bags every other month. Beside the vacuum’s own filtering system, each dust bag tends to have a separate in-built filter. And in the case of bagged HEPA vacuums, each dust bag comes with a HEPA filter built in. And given the price, it goes without saying that replacement HEPA bags can set you back a considerable amount in the long run.

In return, bagged vacuums offer superior filtering ability and hygiene than bagless models. Bagged vacuums offer two filtration layers: the machine’s own filtering system and the dust bag’s in-built filter.

Additionally, modern vacuum bags are usually self-sealing. When you remove the bag from the vacuum, the locking collar will automatically seal up the bag. That way, you are never directly exposed to the bag’s contents. For this reason, bagged vacuums tend to be the go-to option for allergy sufferers.

Bagless Vacuum

In contrast, a bagless vacuum uses an internal dust cup instead of a bag. When the cup is filled, you have to remove the cup, dump the content into the trash can, and put the cup back into the vacuum. The detachable and reusable cup is a major consideration for many people who don’t want the extra, ongoing cost of vacuum bags and like to keep things simple.

It also doesn’t hurt to mention that bagless vacuums seem to be more popular than bagged models, and it’s for all the right reasons, such as reduction of rubbish into landfills. Household names like Dyson, Shark, and Hoover all prioritize bagless vacuums over bagged ones with more models and options to better match  your needs. Furthermore, because these companies invest a lot into research and development of their bagless segments, these units have a technological edge over conventional models.

The V11 Torque Drive, for example, has many unique features which bolster its overall performance and improve user’s experience.

Bagless HEPA Vacuum

Though a bagless vacuum is arguably a better purchase in terms of pure upfront cost, it’s not without its drawbacks. There’s only a single layer of filtration, unlike bagged vacuums which have two. To make matters worse, the emptying process is quite messy. You’re directly exposed to contaminants inside the dust cup every time you take it out. Although manufacturers try to keep things neat with hygienic emptying mechanisms, they can only do so much. Direct exposure to residues is indeed minimized, though not completely eliminated.

If you have any form of respiratory medical condition like asthma or allergy, bagless vacuums may not be the best option for you.

Filtration

It’s advisable to pick a reliable HEPA vacuum from a trustworthy brand. But it doesn’t help at all when any company can claim that their vacuum has the best HEPA filter. Since 0.3 micron particles are imperceptible to the naked eye, it’s tough for any average consumer to tell the difference between authentic HEPA filters and fake ones.

This has led to many worrying cases of false advertising where brands exaggerate their filters’ effectiveness. These non-HEPA filters can realistically catch about 70% to 80% of all particles, but in certain circumstances, their effectiveness has been advertised as 99.97%.

As a rule of thumb, only buy from reputable brands, such as Dyson, Shark, or Hoover. Additionally, we suggest you check the vacuum’s manual to see if the filter is certified by trusted organizations like the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST) and UL LLC.

Ease of Maintenance

For any vacuum cleaner, the filtering system is the most critical component which requires routine maintenance and servicing. Vacuum cleaners must be cleaned and/or replaced every once in a while to operate at optimum level, keeping your home fresh and clean.

A unit with detachable components is a good starting point. Assembling and disassembling the filter cartridge shouldn’t take you more than a few minutes.

Speaking of filters, reusable and washable filters are preferable to single-use ones. They can air-dry in a couples of minutes and are just as good as -new.

If your vacuum has single-use filters, make sure you purchase extras on hand. You don’t want to end up with a vacuum whose filter cartridges are no longer produced or cannot be found.

Many vacuums nowadays have lifetime HEPA filters, such as the ones  found in the Dyson V11 Torque Drive and many Hoover vacuums. These filters are designed to last all throughout the vacuum’s expected lifespan. As a result, you don’t have to replace them too often. Instead, just give them a light wash occasionally and the vacuum will operate well for years.

1. Dyson V11 Torque Drive – Best to Buy HEPA Vacuum

Dyson V11 Torque Drive

Pros

  • Powerful suction
  • Excellent carpet performance
  • Innovative design
  • Lightweight, compact
  • Wide selection of accessories
  • Lifetime HEPA filter

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Lacks a trigger lock
  • Small dust cup

Dyson is a household name in the vacuuming industry. The company has a great track record with many innovative, high-performing models. The V11 Torque Drive is one such example.

The V11 packs serious hardware, including a next-gen suction motor, a smart brush roll with sensors, and an on-board color LCD screen, for good measure. And it goes without saying, that a robust filtering system with a lifetime HEPA filter is also part of the deal.

Performance

For a cordless vacuum, the V11 Torque Drive’s cleaning performance is nothing short of impressive. It has no problem dealing with tough dirt on bare floors as well as carpeting.

The strong suction flow comes from Dyson’s new Digital Motor. According to the company, it provides significantly more power, being around 40 times more efficient than the motors in older vacuums.

The V11 also has the Torque Drive floor head, which contains a high speed motorized brush roll. This brush agitates dirt and debris lodged inside carpets and rugs, making it easier for the vacuum to pick them up.

But what sets the V11 apart from the rest of the pack is the Dynamic Load Sensor (DLS). It senses the resistance from carpet fibers against the brush roll and thus makes appropriate changes to the suction, depending on the situation. The vacuum’s microprocessor will then use this data to automatically adjust suction and brush performance accordingly.

And it’s not just carpet, the DLS can also detect when you’re vacuuming bare floors. Once it does, it will automatically dial down performance in order to save energy and prevent damages to your floor.

Dyson V11 Torque Drive Performance

You can fine-tune the vacuum manually with three cleaning modes: Eco, Auto and Boost.

NameDescription
EcoEnergy efficient, but low performance
AutoThe vacuum makes performance changes by itself. This is also the default setting that balances performance and operating time.
BoostProvides extra suction force at maximum level in exchange for shortened operating time. Recommended for quick cleaning sessions of no more than 30 minutes.

Design

The V11 Torque Drive is a fairly lightweight vacuum at 6.68 pounds, most people won’t have any issue handling it easily at this weight. Even if you have arthritis or a bad back, the whole assembly won’t give you as much trouble as other models.

As a typical stick vacuum, you can convert the Torque Drive into a handheld vacuum by removing the suction wand. The general consensus for the handle is a fine blend of comfort and ease of use. However, the same doesn’t apply to  the power trigger, which has received mixed reviews. You must hold down the trigger at all times to keep the vacuum running, which can be a nuisance for certain people. Fortunately, you can purchase a third-party trigger lock add-on as a quick fix.

The vacuum is very maneuverable with 90-degree swivel steering and a sleek profile. It’s not difficult to navigate the vacuum into tight corners and cramped spaces, which is a challenge for conventional vacuum with oversized heads.

The most distinguishing design feature of the V11 Torque Drive can be found behind the motor’s casing: the color LCD screen. It displays all information about the vacuum’s operation in real-time. You can see the battery percentage, cleaning mode, and tips on how to maintain the vacuum via the screen.

Dyson V11 Torque Drive Design

Battery Life

The V11 Torque Drive uses a Lithium-ion battery cell. On Auto cleaning mode, the battery offers about 60 minutes of run-time. Depending on the cleaning mode you choose, the run-time could fluctuate.

You can replace the battery once it becomes worn out. However, you cannot hot-swap the battery for extra cleaning time. For those unfamiliar with the term, hot-swapping is changing the vacuum’s battery cell for a new, fully-charged one, like you would with a remote control. Theoretically, you can  extend the vacuum’s operating time to virtually infinity by buying extra battery packs, though two hours should suffice in most cases.

Though the V11 Torque Drive doesn’t support hot-swapping,  the V11 Outsize— a larger, more premium version— does.

Dust Cup

For a premium model, the dust cup is relatively small. It’s only able to hold about 0.69 dry quart before filling up to the brim. It’s a rare shortcoming in an otherwise excellent vacuum.

The dust cup has an “in-line” design which simply means that it forms a vertical line with the vacuum’s suction mouth, wand, motor, and vent. This way, the airflow is unobstructed and uninterrupted, thus improving the overall performance.

However, the design does have one glaring flaw. In order to empty the dust cup, you have to remove the entire front section of the vacuum (suction wand and floor head) which users report is inconvenient and time consuming.

Filtration System

The filtering system has two parts: a cyclonic filtering system and a lifetime HEPA filter.

The V11 boosts a cyclonic array, which separates dust and dirt particles from the air and traps them inside the dust cup. Any dirt particles which manage to escape the cyclonic array are then handled by the HEPA filter.

Speaking of  HEPA filters: as long as you keep them in pristine condition with routine cleaning and maintenance, they should last the vacuum’s lifespan. And it doesn’t take too much of your time and effort and ensures that your vacuum operates efficiently for

2. Hoover UH74210PC – Best Value HEPA Vacuum

Hoover UH74210PC

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Powerful suction
  • Works on a variety of floor types
  • Effective against pet hair
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Long power cord
  • Large dust cup
  • HEPA filtration

Cons

  • Heavy and bulky
  • Lacks a floor head height adjustment feature
  • Confusing warranty program

The Hoover UH74210PC is an attractive model for those seeking maximum value from their purchase. It’s fairly affordable, but has all the necessary features to perform effective cleaning tasks of various difficulties. The addition of a HEPA filter makes this vacuum an offering that’s hard to pass up.

Hoover UH74210PC Performance

Performance

With hi-power suction and a versatile brush roll, this unit delivers satisfactory results  on many different types of floors. From bare floors such as tile, laminated, and hardwood to low and medium-pile carpeting, this upright vacuum lives up to expectations.

When cleaning delicate bare surfaces such as hardwood, conventional vacuums with standard brush rolls can leave permanent damage. But the UH74210PC can switch the brush roll on and off for appropriate surfaces, eliminating potential damage to your favourite floors.

Unfortunately, the UH74210PC doesn’t include a floor head height adjustment lever. This small addition would have helped significantly with carpet cleaning. Due to this omission, the vacuum only works well on low and medium pile carpets; high-pile carpets are not practical for this model.

Notably, the UH74210PC is highly effective against pet hair.

Design

As typical of an upright vacuum, the UH74210PC weighs about 16 pounds. While this bulky build won’t fit underneath furniture, it’s weight further exacerbates tricky cleaning areas, such as  stairs.

For what it’s worth, the unit has an ergonomic gripping handle for easier control and smooth-gliding wheels for fluid movements. Swivel steering mechanism further enhances mobility. In addition, a 30-foot power cord gives you extra cleaning range over other models, which usually offer 20-foot power cords. While there is no cord retracting mechanism, there are hooks to neatly wrap the cord around the body of the vacuum.

Dust Cup

The dust cup is large enough to store approximately 1.36 dry quarts. You can clean a large area or even the entire home several over before it needs to be emptied.

The cup has a bottom emptying system to minimize direct exposure to contaminants. Simply hold the cup over the trash can, press the release tab, and the bottom of the cup swings open, dropping the contents directly into the trash can.

Filtration System

The filtration system of this unit consists of a sole HEPA filter. The filter is washable; just rinse it with cold water, allow it to dry completely and you can reuse it as new.

Hoover UH74210PC Filtration System

Accessories & Warranty

The vacuum comes with three accessories in the box.

NameDescription
Pet Turbo ToolAn air-driven brush tool designed for maximum pet hair pick-up.
Crevice ToolFor cleaning tight, narrow gaps and corners around the house.
Dusting BrushOptimized for picking up dust on different surfaces.

There is no official document regarding the standard warranty length for this unit, which is odd. While Hoover typically offers a one year warranty for labor and parts, the limited manufacturer warranty differs from one model to another. You may have to discuss with a Hoover representative in detail before committing to their products.

3. Hoover MAXLife Pro Pet UH74220PC – Best HEPA Vacuum for Allergies

Hoover UH74210PC

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Powerful suction
  • Works on a variety of floor types
  • Effective against pet hair
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Long power cord
  • Large dust cup
  • Activated carbon HEPA filtration

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Lacks a floor head height adjustment feature
  • Confusing warranty program

Without proper treatment, airborne allergens can cause mild discomfort or even be lethal, especially for those with severe respiratory conditions like asthma. During cleaning, you’ll inevitably encounter these airborne particles one way or another. Which is why a specialized HEPA vacuum like the Hoover MaxLife Pro Pet UH74220PC makes perfect sense in such instances.

Hoover UH74210PC Performance

Performance

This vacuum has received praise for its performance on low and mid-pile carpets using a motorized brush roll. However, reviews indicate that it’s a whole different situation on high-pile carpets, where the vacuum has a tendency to intertwine itself with the thick piling.

A quick fix would be to adjust the floor head’s height, but the irony is that the UH74220PC has no height-adjustable feature for the floor head. You can take matters into your own hand and attempt to lift the head yourself, but the unit’s bulky build won’t make it easy.

If this vacuum has no problem with carpets and rugs, bare floors should be a breeze. It can pick up common dust of all sizes and, much to our surprise, pet hair as well. Since pet dandruff, fleas, and bacteria are also allergens for certain people, the UH74220PC makes a great purchase for pet owners.

Design

The UH74220PC weighs 17 pounds, the second heaviest model featured in this entry. The weight of this unit should be seriously considered for the elderly or infirm, or for those with conditions such as arthritis or mobility issues.

As for maneuverability, the wheels can glide smoothly and don’t scratch sensitive surfaces like hardwood. However, they occasionally get stuck on high-pile carpets, which hurt the overall rating significantly.

The vacuum has a non-retractable 30-foot power cord. A retracting mechanism for the power cord would’ve been much appreciated but since it doesn’t come with one, the cord must be wrapped around the vacuum instead.

A long suction hose gives you extra working range. In addition, there are storage brackets on the vacuum’s body that can be used to store the trio of accompanying accessories.

There’s a series of LED headlights on the floor head for nighttime cleaning, with rubber bumpers to protect against damaging your sideboards and cornices.

Dust Cup

The dust cup can hold approximately 1.37 dry quart, ideal for large spaces and homes.

Just like the UH72625, the UH74220PC has a bottom emptying system. The dust cup’s bottom functions like a trap door; it drops contents straight into the trash can, minimizing your exposure to the contaminants.

Filtration System

The hardware includes a 5-cyclone array and a carbon HEPA filter. While the cyclone takes out the larger dust and dirt particles, the carbon HEPA filter handles the smaller, more dangerous particles.

The activated carbon filter also deals with all sorts of odors, which is a blessing if you also have pets to look after. And as you’d expect from a HEPA filter, it’s washable and reusable.

Hoover UH74210PC Filtration System

Accessories & Warranty

The vacuum comes with three accessories.

NameDescription
Pet Upholstery ToolA small brush for handling pet hair on upholstery and other delicate surfaces.
Dusting BrushHas soft bristles to clean out dust on a variety of surfaces.
Crevice ToolFor cleaning tight, narrow gaps and corners around the house.

Just like with the Hoover UH74210PC, there’s no solid information about this vacuum’s warranty program, which is surprising. You will have to check directly with a Hoover representative to understand the specific warranty details and decide if it is right for you.

4. Oreck UK30305PC – Best HEPA Vacuum for Mold

Oreck UK30305PC

Pros

  • Impressive suction performance
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Long power cord
  • Large-sized dust bag
  • Robust filtering system
  • Extensive warranty

Cons

  • No accessories

Mold is another pesky (and potentially debilitating) allergen which conventional vacuums can’t handle, but specialized vacuums can. Which is why the Oreck UK30305PC makes our list for its ability to effectively address mold spores and fungi. The self-sealing hypoallergenic dust bags alone are enough to appeal to buyers who suffer from allergies or symptoms due to mold. Additionally, the unit’s surprisingly neat and easy to empty and clean, considering it’s a bagged vacuum.

Oreck UK30305PC Performance

Performance

The vacuum retains the commercial-grade vacuum motor found in older Oreck models. Despite its compact size, the UK30305PC yields an impressive amount of suction force. On bare floors, the vacuum can even suck up LEGO pieces, which leaves common dust without a chance.

For carpets and rugs, the vacuum has a special cleaning mode which activates the brush roll. The brush combes through carpet fibers to pick out all of the embedded dirt and debris with satisfactory results.

Design

Though Oreck doesn’t provide a specific weight for this unit, we found documentation which mentions that the whole assembly weighs less than 10 pounds. The portable design also received positive feedback and reviews from past users.

Other than the motor, Oreck managed to keep the overall weight in check with plastic components. To add more maneuverability, easy-steering wheels further provide fluid movements when you’re cleaning corners and under furniture.

Another feature includes an array of LED lights in front of the floor head, which will come in handy in dimly lit areas or if you are cleaning at night. You can also use the lights for attics, basements, and garages as well. And for good measure, a 35-foot power cord is usually long and covers an impressive distance from any power source.

Trade-offs are inevitable, nonetheless. Since the whole unit is streamlined for compactness, certain high-end features are understandably sacrificed as a result.

Dust Bag & Filtration System

The UK30305PC uses Oreck’s Type CC HEPA dust bags (serial number AK1CC6H.) Unfortunately, there’s no official measurement of the bag’s capacity other than “XL-sized”. That said, past users agreed that each bag can last for several days before needing to be emptied.

Oreck UK30305PC Dust Bag & Filtration System

Each bag carries a 5-layer HEPA filter. According to Oreck, the in-built filter achieves a 99.97% capture rate against 0.3 micron particles, so mold spores won’t be much of an issue for the vacuum. Other than the dust bag’s HEPA filter, the unit has no other filter.

The bag also has Oreck’s special SaniSeal system. It’s a locking collar that automatically seals shut when the dust bag is removed from the vacuum. As a result, you won’t ever be directly exposed to any contaminants collected.

Accessories & Warranty

The biggest downside to getting this vacuum is that it doesn’t come with any accessory at all. You’re getting the vacuum with a few extra dust bags, and that’s it.

Luckily, the lack of other tools – like a crevice tool or dusting brush – isn’t serious enough to be a deal-breaker. It performs well enough that these tools aren’t necessarily required.

The warranty lasts for seven years, the longest among models featured in this entry.

5. Shark ZU561 Navigator Lift-Away – Best Sealed HEPA Vacuum Cleaner

Shark Navigator ZU561

Pros

  • Versatile Lift-Away design
  • Effective against pet hair
  • Effective on hard floors and low-medium carpets
  • Adjustable suction
  • Anti-wrap brush roll
  • Maneuverable
  • HEPA filtration
  • Hygienic sealing system
  • Long warranty

Cons

  • Not effective on high-pile carpeting

Just like the Hoover MAXLife Pro Pet UH74220PC, the Shark ZU561 is an effective pet hair vacuum, with plenty more to offer. Equipped with the Zero-M brush roll, Lift-Away design, Anti-Allergen Complete Seal system, and HEPA filtration system, it’s a complete package that’s worth serious consideration.

Shark Navigator ZU561 Performance

Performance

On bare floors, this unit collects  common dust and dirt, but it’s especially effective against small debris and fine particles (grains of sugar, rice, and fine dust, etc.)

But the vacuum’s actual specialty is pet hair. With the help of the Zero-M brush roll, it can pick up stray hair and clumps without clogging up like conventional vacuums.

While the vacuum can also clean carpets and rugs,  there’s only one catch: it only works on low-pile carpets. The suction and brush can only do so much on medium-pile carpets, let alone thick and dense piling. As the piling gets thicker and denser, the vacuum further struggles, unable to collect debris it would on other, less challenging surfaces.

Design

For an upright vacuum, the ZU561 is relatively light. The whole unit weighs 13 pounds and is the lightest upright on this list.

While a 25-foot power cord is shorter than those of other vacuums, it is long enough to cover a decent distance.

The ZU561 has Shark’s unique Lift-Away design. Basically, the canister (which contains the motor and the dust cup) can be detached from the rest of the vacuum. In other words, you can transform the ZU561 from an upright to a canister vacuum with a click of a button. This configuration is recommended for shelves, stairs, or places beyond reach.

But even in its fully-assembled form, the vacuum remains highly maneuverable with a set of smooth-gliding wheels and swivel steering.

Dust Cup

Despite being an upright vacuum, the ZU561 only has a 0.82 dry quarts dust cup with no dirt ejecting mechanism.

Filtration System

The main selling point is the Anti-Allergen Complete Seal technology. This technology prevents the dust cup’s contents from escaping through cracks and seams on the vacuum’s body, ensuring that all contaminants are contained and airtight at all times.

Of course, the ZU561 features a HEPA filter to capture all of the harmful particles.

Shark ZU561 Filtration System

Accessories & Warranty

In the vacuum’s shipping box are three tools.

NameDescription
Hair Removal Multi-toolA combination between a pet hair brush and an upholstery tool.
Wide Upholstery ToolUpholstery tool with a wide suction nozzle for cleaning delicate surfaces.
Duster Crevice ToolA hybrid between a crevice tool and a dusting brush.

Standard warranty for the ZU561 is five years.

Conclusion

HEPA vacuums are more than just a luxury; they’re crucial household appliances for those with respiratory medical conditions and for those wanting to maintain the highly cleanliness standards in their homes. We hope that this article has been helpful in helping you find the best HEPA vacuums. We’re certain that they’ll live up to your expectations and help you maintain a clean, healthy home.
