If you have a lot of carpets and rugs to clean, a robust brush system is another key criterion. 

When it comes to tools, a typical robot vacuum has two brushes: a primary motorized brush bar and a side-sweeping brush. These two serve different purposes and in no way are interchangeable for each other.

Cleaning Performance

The brush bar serves as the carpet agitator, helping the robot dislodge stubborn dirt and debris stuck inside the carpet piling. It also doubles as the dirt funnel. The scrubbing motion draws dirt and debris closer to the robot’s suction mouth, making the cleaning process far more efficient.

Meanwhile, the side-sweeping brush’s primary task is to clean up the side walls. Its secondary function (arguably more important) is to pull out dust, dirt, and debris from the house’s corners. Given that most robot vacuums are circular, they cannot fit into a tight corner. The side-sweeping brush rectifies this problem.

Design

Bump Navigation

LiDAR-aided Navigation

Design

Therefore, it’s not recommended for cleaning up heavy messes.

Even when equipped with a robust brush system, rug performance is unreliable. While the unit has no problem with low-pile carpeting— say, smudges and stubborn debris lodged between fibers— the same doesn’t apply to high-pile carpets and rugs.

It also performs well on carpets and rugs thanks to the surface-detecting feature. When the robot realizes it’s running on carpets, it auto-adjusts its suction power for greater efficiency. 

One glaring flaw the vacuum has when it comes to carpet vacuuming is that it doesn’t do well on black carpets. The black color can confuse the optical sensor, making the robot perform erratically as a result.

If you want the robot to clean a specific area on your floor instead of burning battery running around the house, a separate spot-cleaning feature should suffice.

Mopping System

The mopping system of the E35 is rudimentary, which stands to reason given its price. It would be able to mop your floor, but it doesn’t have any other smart features to make the process more efficient.

A 4.73-oz. water tank and a cloth mopping pad are also part of the package. Unlike the Roborock S5 MAX, which has a mopping pad bracket, the E35’s pad is installed onto the water tank. As a result, you’re not given the choice to adjust the water level like you do with the S5 MAX.

Design

Weighing 7 pounds, the E35 is lightweight. It measures 3.6 inches tall, so it won’t have any problem fitting underneath most furniture.

The top side contains a row of control buttons, which include a power button, a Spot-Clean button, and a Charge button. The Charge button can also be used to recall the robot to its charging dock.

A high-end robot vacuum seems nice at first, but it wouldn’t make much sense if you didn’t use all of the features. If you’re vacuuming bare floors, go for something basic like the iLife V8s. It is an entry-level robot that offers decent performance for a reasonable price. Though it doesn’t have the premium features of higher-end robots, it has its own appeal. Its high suction, for example, makes it a wonderful robot to use for bare floor cleaning.

As mentioned above, the iLife V8s can clean bare floors (hardwood, vinyl, tiles, etc.) very well.

The robot’s powerful suction allows it to handle solid debris like cereal pieces and bread crumbs on bare floors. But the suction nozzle risks clogging if faced with larger debris like rags or socks. To make things worse, the V8s doesn’t have any safety mechanism like an emergency kill switch to shut it down in such instances. It would still roll along your floor, but wouldn’t collect anything, wasting time and energy.

And it goes without saying that this vacuum is unfit for carpets and rugs, since it doesn’t come with a motorized brush roll like other robots.

Mopping System

The crown jewel of the iLife V8s is the Intelligent Mopping System.

The whole V8s system consists of a 10.5-oz. water tank and a standard cloth mopping pad. The steps to prepare and install the mopping system are simple and quick. Once you’re done with the standard installation, just switch the robot to Mopping Mode and you’re ready to go.

Because the dust bin must be removed in order to install the water tank, the robot cannot vacuum and mop at the same time.

You can set the water tank output using three preset options through the remote control, Gentle, Standard, and Strong, for different purposes and stains.

The robot is 3.19 inches tall and can fit underneath furniture with ease.

iLife V8s Design

There are two ways you can control the iLife V8s: through the accompanying remote control, or through the command buttons on its top side. The robot’s top also features an LCD screen displaying battery, cleaning schedule, and the current cleaning mode.

The underside features 360-degree wheels and two side-sweeping brushes that act as both side-sweepers and carpet agitators. However, iLife removes the standard motorized brush bar from the V8s. This is the prime reason why the V8s doesn’t have as great a performance on carpeting as other iLife robots.

With the motorized brush bar sacrificed for lower cost, the dust cup tries to make up for it with a generous capacity of about 0.68 dry quarts.

Battery Life

The internal Li-ion battery of the V8s can provide 1.5 to 2.5 hours of non-stop vacuuming and mopping. Like other robot vacuums, the V8s returns to the docking station once its battery drops low.

Navigation System

The V8s navigation system is not stellar by any means. After all, it uses bump navigation to go around the house. Fortunately, the V8s makes the process smoother by having a series of anti-collision sensors to detect obstacles and walls. Thus, it is smart enough to avoid crashing into furniture or becoming stuck between chair legs.

Other than bump navigation, you can also steer the robot via the remote control’s arrow keys. In a way, the V8s can be maneuvered around like you would with a remote-controllable toy. Other standard sensors such as cliff-detecting sensors and magnetic sensors are also on board.

Filtration & Warranty

The filters are made from filter-grade foam, meaning they aren’t HEPA-rated. They are also not washable, so you have to replace them every couple of months.

If you need HEPA filtration for the V8s, some replacement kits have HEPA filters compatible with the V8s’s filter bracket.

Mopping System
