The Roborock S5 has remarkable cleaning performance on all floor types and against all sorts of debris (including pet hair). The robot also has an extra mopping mode if you want it to take on mopping duty too.

Performance aside, the S5 is armed with an advanced navigation system powered by lasers to help it move more efficiently. The robot is WiFi-enabled, so it’s got everything from a smartphone app for control to support for Alexa (no Google Assistant, unfortunately.)

Roborock S5 Performance


Roborock didn’t disappoint and fully delivered its promise of high cleaning power with the S5. The powerful suction motor working in tandem with the brushes can scrape clean all surfaces in the house, regardless of hardwood or carpeting.

The robot can deal with dust, dirt, and debris from small rice grains to significant cereal pieces efficiently. It manages to suck up even AAA batteries without much of an issue. Furthermore, many pet owners have attested that the S5 can work excellently with pets, even long-haired ones who shed heavily and frequently.

The Roborock S5 has four cleaning modes for you to choose from: Quiet, Balanced, Turbo, and Max. If you want the robot to make the least noise as possible (for early morning or late night vacuuming), then the Quiet mode is the one to use.

Turbo and Max mode is for when you need maximum power from your robot. Though it will kick your robot’s performance into overdrive, these modes are noisy and will quickly drain the robot’s battery.

The Balanced mode is the default cleaning mode and will suffice for day-to-day house cleaning. You can set up all of these things via the downloadable smartphone app (Mi Home App).

The S5 can also take up floor mopping duty for you, but unfortunately, the robot won’t be able to beat the thoroughness of hands-and-knees mopping.


The S5 still has the simple disc-shaped design of traditional robot vacuums. It will easily fit underneath furniture, being 3.8 inches tall. However, since the robot is a bit wide, it may have trouble fitting between narrow gaps such as dining chair legs.

Protruding from the top of the robot is a distinctive “turret.” This is where the bulk of the S5’s navigation hardware resides, including a laser rangefinder

Roborock S5 Design

The rangefinder continuously surveys the surrounding environment to let the robot know where it should go and where it is in the house. It is also the core component behind the S5’s ability to create virtual maps. Plus, since it is laser-based, the vacuum will work in the dark just fine.

Underneath the robot, you will find the main multi-surface roller brush and a side-sweeping brush

The brush bar is a combination of rubber, and stiff bristles made to agitate and dislodge dust and dirt from whatever cleaning surface the robot finds itself on. When the robot nears a wall, the side-sweeping brush will scrub the baseboards and pick out all of the refuse stuck in the gap between the floor and the wall.

In case the brush gets tangled up by pet hair, there is a razor tool hidden underneath the top lid of the robot. You can use this tool to quickly cut up and untangle the hair strands caught and stuck inside the bristles.

The internal dust cup can hold 0.48 liters (0.4 dry quarts) worth of dirt and debris, which is disappointingly small for such a great robot. The water reservoir for mopping can hold 0.29 liters (0.07 gallons) of water.

Navigation & Control

When you first unbox the robot, it is recommended that you let it do a trial run around the house to map out the layout. It will use this map to navigate the home when you start a cleaning session for real next time around.

Unfortunately, it cannot create multiple maps simultaneously, which would have been hugely useful for multi-floor cleaning. This capability is reserved only for the newer Roborock S6, so consider the upgrade if you have several floors you want the robot to clean.

You can view the map the robot has drawn through the mobile app. The robot’s position will be shown in real-time on the map, so you’ll always be aware of where it is in the house. 

Additionally, you can use the app’s tool and the virtual map to draw virtual no-go lines. But in case you prefer having a physical border, the S5 is compatible with Roborock-branded magnetic strips.

The S5’s sensor suite covers all other basics, such as anti-drop and anti-collision sensors. They will work together to keep the robot from damaging itself.

Battery Life

The Li-ion battery pack of the S5 can provide consistent power for 100 to 150 minutes on a full charge (with Balanced Mode on.) The robot will automatically return to its charging station when it detects its battery running low. It also has a recharge and resume function for large houses.


The Roborock S5 has a washable E11 filter, which can catch 99.2% of particulates under 0.3 microns. Though very close, it is still less effective than a HEPA filter, which can trap 99.97%. Fortunately, true HEPA replacement filters compatible with the S5 are available for purchase.


Roborock only offers a one-year warranty for the S5. Albeit short, it is the industry standard warranty length, so we can’t fault the company for that.

Though it is one of the more affordable robots on the market, the eufy BoostIQ RoboVac 11S has everything that the average consumer will ever need from a robot vacuum. It’s slim with an eye-catching design that will not betray its budget price tag. The robot has excellent cleaning performance on various floor types and is effective against multiple kinds of debris, including pet hair.

With everything above plus a bargain price tag, if you’re looking for a value-rich product, the 11S will surely make you happy.


Most of the positive feedback from consumers about the 11S’ performance was directed toward its cleaning job on hardwood floors. The robot has a big appetite for dirt, debris, and pet hair while on bare floor, picking up just about everything in its way. Despite the high performance, it doesn’t scratch up the flooring with its brushes.

The robot has sensors to know when it is on carpet to start up the carpet mode. In this mode, suction is boosted, and the brushes begin to spin faster to comb through the dense piling.

Low-pile carpet performance is generally excellent. However, when it comes to high-pile carpet, the 11S starts to falter visibly. It will only be able to clean dust, debris, and hair on the carpet’s surface. Anything deeper below the surface will be left mostly untouched.

There 11s comes with a remote controller that enables you to choose from four cleaning modes. You have Auto Mode for regular cleaning, a Spot Mode to get the vacuum to spot clean, an Edge Mode for wall cleaning, and a Single Room Mode.


With a height of 2.85 inches, the 11S will have no problem fitting underneath furniture. The glass top of the 11S is perfectly smooth and uniform, since it lacks a shape-breaking turret like in the S5.

But as good-looking as the glass top is, it seems to smudge very easily. Even touching the glass slightly with your fingers will leave marks. Worse, if your pets were to jump onto the robot with their grubby paws (which they will eventually), be prepared to have unsightly paw-prints stuck to the glass.

Navigation & Control

Navigation is definitely not the 11S’ strong suit. The robot uses bump navigation to get around, which is inefficient but also undesirable for multi-floor cleaning. Every time, the 11S has to struggle for dozens of minutes to find the door to the next room. This wastes battery life.

Basic features like anti-drop and anti-collision are still available.

Eufy has cut down on many other features like WiFi-connectivity, voice commands, and mobile app control. You get a remote controller instead.

As for no-go lining, since there’s neither an app nor a virtual map, you will have to set boundaries using magnetic strips.

Battery Life

Battery life is very long with the Li-ion battery. The robot can continuously clean for 2 hours on a full charge and will need roughly 6 hours to recharge from 0%.

The robot’s mediocre navigation capability also shows through its ineffectiveness at returning to its charging base. If your house has a complicated layout, the robot will most likely bumble around for a long time, trying to find a door to make it back to base. 

Customers have reported that it is not rare for the robot to fail and die midway. When possible, you should just carry it physically back to its charging base to spare it the trouble.


The 11S has a triple-layer filtration system, which consists of a dual-layer filter and a “high-performance” filter (which is not HEPA.) 

Both filters must be replaced once every two months. When you first buy the vacuum, it will be shipped with an extra set of filters. Once that runs its course, you have to purchase replacement kits.

The Roomba 614 is iRobot’s entry-level robot vacuum that’s got everything you need to get started as a robot vacuum owner. 

It has a distinct strong suit for carpeting and pet hair, capable of sucking stray strands and furballs up from the piling with little fuss. Furthermore, it is also a charming, handy little robot with an attractive design and an abundance of smart features.

For the price, it is an excellent option to consider if your house has a lot of carpeting to sift through and a pet (or several) to keep under control.

iRobot Roomba 614 Performance


Like previously mentioned, the Roomba 614 has fairly well-rounded cleaning performance. It is just as effective on hardwood as it is on carpeting. On both surfaces, most customers found that it can handle dust, dirt, and debris— pet hair and cat litter included— almost equally well.

Besides the high suction of the motor, the dual multi-surface brushes and the side-sweeping brush help dislodge the stubborn dirt, smudges, and stains on bare floors. They are also great at raking through thick carpet piling, which explains a huge deal of why the 614 is so great on carpeting and rugs.

Despite having a knack of dealing with pet hair, it is worth keeping in mind that the brushes have stiff bristles, making it prone to getting tangled with hair. When the robot starts becoming less effective (leaving dust and debris that it usually would’ve sucked up), there’s a good chance that the roller brush is jammed.

In that case, flip the robot over and untangle all of the hair. A razor tool is shipped with the robot that you can use to make untangling easier.


The robot is 3.6 inches tall, which is quite tall compared to other robots on the list. Nonetheless, it will still fit underneath most pieces of furniture.

At the top-center of the robot is the power button. You also have two command buttons: a Spot button to enact the spot cleaning mode and a Home button to spur the robot to return to its charging station.

On the outer rim of the robot, you will find a tiny turret. It doesn’t hold a laser sensor like the Roborock S5, unfortunately. Instead, it has the Room Confinement (RCON) sensor. This sensor detects infrared signals from other iRobot devices such as the charging station and Virtual Wall. The Roomba uses this sensor to know where to return to recharge and where the boundary is (if you use a Virtual Wall) to stop and turn around.

Of course, underneath the robot are the dual multi-surface brushes and the edge-sweeping brush.

The dust bin capacity is 0.3 liters (0.27 dry quarts), which is small even for robot vacuum standards. You will find yourself having to empty it quite often.

Navigation & Control

Overall, the Roomba 614’s navigation capability is lackluster. It uses bump navigation to get around and doesn’t have any distinguishing features other than the core basics (anti-drop and anti-collision.) 

It is not WiFi-enabled, doesn’t have voice command functions, and can’t work with virtual assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant.

The 614 is compatible with iRobot’s Virtual Wall, and you can choose to bundle the robot up with one or two of these while checking out. Besides doing the standard border-marking work, it also has a special Halo mode, which marks a 4-foot circle around the device that the robot isn’t allowed to enter.

Battery Life

The Li-ion battery will give you between 1 to 1.5 hours of cleaning. The battery is good for about 2,500 charging cycles (18 to 24 months) before it stops holding a charge effectively. Once you start noticing your robot’s power dropping, you should contact iRobot to get a replacement battery.


The 614 has an AeroVac filter. It is not the same as a HEPA filter, nor is it as effective. The standard filter may not be useful against microscopic particles such as some allergens and airborne bacteria.

The RoboVac 30C retains pretty much everything that made its earlier (and cheaper) cousin— the 11S— special. From the slim and attractive body to the robust and versatile cleaning performance on various floor types and against all sorts of debris and pet hair.

But the new robot design is not without its specialties. The 30C has markedly better performance on hardwood, thanks to a new motor that’s more efficient and packs more power. It’s also got an extra side-sweeping brush and a brand-new navigation and control suite with a mobile app and voice commands.

If you have a lot of hardwood to deal with, the 30C will be an excellent choice.

With all of the performance upgrades that Eufy has given the 30C, it’s not lost on customers that this robot is a high performer. Its carpeting performance is acceptable. Unlike on hardwood, which the 30C leaves spotless after a single pass, carpets and rugs require a few passes before they’re thoroughly cleaned. Nonetheless, if you only have a few carpeted spots around the house, this robot will handle them just fine with extra effort.

Reviews from pet owners are favorable for the 30C. It’s adept at picking up long strands of pet hair and has no trouble sucking up thick hair clumps. As long as adequate maintenance is given (keeping the brushes untangled), the robot will manage pet hair in the house decently.

The 30C has four cleaning modes in total: An Auto Mode, an Edge Mode, a Spot Mode, and a Quick Cleaning Mode. You can set them either through the mobile control app or with the physical remote controller.


The 30C measures 2.9 inches tall. The fact that the 30C is only half an inch taller than the 11S is quite impressive and hugely appreciated for all of the extras that it’s got. The robot will be able to weave underneath furniture with relative ease.

The robot’s top is adorned by a gorgeous bronze motif underneath a layer of protective tempered glass. You will also find the power button and a WiFi signal light, which will light up when your robot has a stable connection with the house’s WiFi.

Navigation & Control

Despite some critical improvements like being WiFi-enabled, mobile app-controlled, and voice commands, the 30C still uses the age-old bump navigation technique instead of the newer mapping navigation style.

The 30C’s movements are generally regarded as gentle. The robot uses its anti-collision sensors to detect objects and walls from a distance to stop or turn away before it could ram into them full speed. Additionally, the anti-drop sensors are still there to keep the robot from hurling itself off the stairs or the balcony.

The layout of the D7’s underside is understandably different from traditional robot vacuum designs. How Good is a Roomba with Pet Hair?

Overall, they are great, but we won’t go so far as to claim that they are perfect.

Robot vacuums have advanced a lot over the years and now have higher cleaning power than ever before. That also means their efficiency against various types of debris— pet hair included— has significantly improved. It is to the point where some premium robot vacuums (the Roborock S6, for example) have performance that can match up with some traditional pet hair-oriented vacuums.

Still, as we said, they’re nowhere close to being perfect. 

A good Roomba will be able to pick up the majority of pet hair on the floor, but you most likely will still have to clean up after it. There will be places like the house corners that your robot can’t reach.
