“Life’s burdens are lighter when I laugh at myself.”
Good quote, isn’t it? It has nothing to do with the article, by the way. I happened upon it while I was wracking my brain trying to think of a good way to start this off. Something that involves ‘the best shower heads’.
As you can see now, I’ve dismissed that notion and decided to try a more, I daresay, lighthearted approach. I always enjoy the feeling of being stolen away for a short while by a few good, simple words. And this here is me hoping you and I have that in common.
In any case, I’m Jay. Nice to be seeing you here now. Welcome to our humble shop, greenhome101.com, where we, indeed, have what you seek – at least, that’s usually the case.
It seems that you’re in need of a new shower head. If so, take a look below. We have plenty in our collection, from handhelds to full-on combo sets. I’m sure at least one of them can meet your wants.
As I see it, there are two possibilities in which you’d look for a new shower head: 1) yours is too old, too leaky to be functional as desired or 2) you’ve just bought a new one and are not at all happy with it, whether it is due to the quality or functions. I know these predicaments all too well being a consumer myself.
The first possibility is expected, of course. The second, on the other hand, can often be infuriating. Such a waste of time and money. That’s why we now sit and discuss the important points in selecting a shower head so as to ascertain that the next purchase will last and please you.
The points presented in our buying guide won’t take more than a mere moment to go through and you can definitely benefit from them later on, so bear with me.
If this article is of use to you in any way, consider leaving a comment to let me know. That’d help a man sleep more easily at night. Cheers!
Things To Look At When Buying A Shower Head
In total, there are four major aspects that we should concern ourselves with prior to a purchase of a shower head: the available types and materials, the multiple functions of shower heads, and the best manufacturers to commit.
TYPES OF SHOWER HEADS
Shower heads have existed for a long time. So long that showering isn’t just a body cleansing routine anymore but a leisure activity, that their forms and styles have diversified greatly throughout the length of history. We can even resemble the pleasure of showering under a waterfall, for crying out loud!
That being said, shower heads, albeit varied in design, are categorized in four fundamental types.
- RAINFALL: similar to fixed shower heads, rainfalls are stationary and limited in angles. However, the straight-down water streams are more convenient and they cover a wider body area by comparison. Duly, many prefer rainfall
- (ANGLED) FIXED: fixed shower heads are easy to use, install and maintain. They are small and tend to require no support, unlike handhelds. While that’s a big plus, the fact that their angles are limited is the exact opposite.
- HANDHELD: handheld shower heads are the most versatile out of the four, as in it can help you access and reach certain angles and body areas that are probably impossible for the other types. It can work with most shower stalls, without regard to dimensions.
- COMBO: a shower head bombo is a set of a fixed and a handheld for maximum functionality. A fixed can be an angled or a rainfall. A combo usually takes the most space out of the four but also provides the most utility.
A little side note: for the sake of a pleasing shower, a suitable shower filter would make things all the more enjoyable. A nice combination of shower head and filter would mean double the pleasure. Trust me on this.
AVAILABLE MATERIALS FOR SHOWER HEADS
It’s almost common knowledge how critical the material of a fixture can be to its usability. Certain properties of certain substances are good for certain purposes. They each have strengths and weaknesses that are either exploited or accepted by manufacturers and users.
ABS is cheap, reasonably durable and, most importantly, lightweight. In my own experience as well as other references, ABS is best for handheld shower heads. Handhelds are to be moved and weight plays quite a big role in a slippery and limited space.
Its weaknesses include durability and melting point, which is at 105 degrees celsius. Still, it can stay perfectly good for several years as long as you don’t drop it too hard or don’t shower in boiling hot water.
Given that it is a metal, brass is naturally stronger and more long-lasting than plastic. It doesn’t rust, which makes it the perfect material for plumbing fixtures. Compared to stainless steel, brass is cheaper yet exhibits the same functional properties.
Though lead leaching out from brass into water is a real concern, it is only dangerous if the water is consumed. It should be fine for showering.
Another thing to note is its weight. Since brass is rather heavy, a brass handheld shower head might not be very comfortable to some.
As with brass, stainless steel does not corrode and very durable. They are the two best metal materials for plumbing fixtures, no doubt.
Still, all things considered, stainless steel is not better than brass in the bathroom. It’s a bit lighter, yes, but the material is unnecessarily expensive due to properties that are not usually applicable in the shower.
That’s why there are not many ‘stainless steel shower heads’, but rather ‘stainless steel hoses’
Spray settings have become a significant factor in how well a model sells. As I touched on earlier, shower time is now, to some extent, as much of a recreation as listening to music or watching a movie. And these settings – massage and mist, to name a few – are the ones that brings about the joy.
On the market, there are many models offering various spray patterns. In fact, they are enough to easily confuse the unversed. As to save you some time, I’ll group them all here: what they’re normally called and what they look like, so you’ll know what you’re getting yourself into.
- Full body/saturating: normal spray of any shower head
- Concentrated: similar to the rinsing stream of a faucet
- Pulsating (for massaging): full body or concentrated pulsing streams.
- Mist: as the name suggests – fine particles of water
These spray settings may also be diversified with extra augmentations for experience enhancement. This can include a pressure boost or water saving mode, among others.
GOOD BRANDS ON THE MARKET
Kitchen appliance is one massive industry, full of potential. That’s why, despite the existence of a multitude of prominent companies, there are young and new brands entering the game every decade, resulting in a sea of names.
It’s a good thing in a sense of competition between brands, leading to increased innovation and competitive prices. On the flip side, it muddies the water when it comes to picking out which brand one should commit to.
We’ve done some research, from online forums and customer reviews to actual friends and people we know, to list these few companies which we believe to be the best providers of household shower heads at the moment.
Allen and Joseph Speakman, brothers and founders of Speakman itself, invented both the handheld and the adjustable shower heads. Today, the company continues to live up to the legacy of the Speakman brothers, satisfying its customers with superb and innovative products.
Started only in 2015, the young Aqua Elegante has quickly become a well-known name thanks to its high-quality, cost-efficient products, especially shower heads. As a family-owned company, they understand what we need in the shower and how we feel about poorly made products.
As one of the major brands of household plumbing fixtures, the name Moen is hardly alien to us. If you’re already a fan of the company, there’s no reason to switch to another now. Moen shower heads are of quality. That is for certain.
Although Delta Faucet is better known for its faucets, be it in the kitchen or bathroom, shower heads that bear the label carry a particular value. Not all Delta shower heads are fantastic, I’ll give you that, but they do make the occasional excellent items, like the one we’ll look at later.
Aquadance is not as well known as the others. However, their products are without a doubt worth considering. Operating mainly as an online retail business, the brands shower heads can be found all over the internet and roughly 80-90% (yes, that much) of them are loved by the users. I think that do speak volumes.
Best Shower Head Reviews 2021
From handheld to wall-mounted, from non-adjustable to multi-setting: whatever your need may be, I’m positive that you’ll find one that suits you right here. Let’s take a quick peek.
1. AQUA ELEGANTE 6 FUNCTION LUXURY – BEST SHOWER HEAD TO BUY
One simply can’t go wrong with an Aqua Elegante shower head, let alone a 6-setting, high pressure model. Apart from the overtly beautiful, sleek design, the quality of the Aqua Elegante 6-function luxury adjustable shower head is positively reviewed by almost every user on multiple platforms.
- 6 settings
- Easy-to-remove regulator
- Brass fittings
- Teflon included
- 5-year Money Back Guarantee
- ABS Plastic
The shower head has such a high capacity of ability for an item its size. Though no bigger than a man’s hand and lighter than a water bottle, it offers a spa-like shower pack, including saturating power blast (high pressure), pulsating massage, gentle rain, two mixed modes and drench (to save water).
Constructed with heavy duty chrome plated ABS plastic, it is very lightweight yet considerably impact-absorbing. The fact that the shower head is wall-mounted, which is typically NOT prone to physical contact, makes it even more long-lasting.
Additionally, in contrast to regular shower heads, the quality fitting and joint are made of brass instead of plastic. Brass, as metal, is much more sturdy, allowing for extra tightening that would otherwise crack plastic. Leaks simply don’t have room to appear.
Installation also comes without a fuss, similarly to most shower heads on the market. Remove the old head and clean off the old teflon tape, then add new tape (a brand new roll is included) and twist the new shower head in. The whole process will likely take less than 10 minutes. Shower filters will also fit in with ease. If this isn’t convenient, I don’t know what is.
Should you fancy a stronger water stream, the flow restrictor is removable. The company understands the need for a sufficient water flow, which is usually an issue in area with low water pressure.
That’s why they design the shower head so that the removal of the restrictor may be effortless. Detailed instructions can be found in the package.
Maintenance of shower heads is pretty minimal in general. However, if it’s hard water that runs in your house, there is buildup that will eventually interfere with the flow of water. Thanks to the rubber nozzles, a few rubs should clean all of that gunk right out, bringing the maintenance requirement back to its next-to-zero status.
If all of the aforementioned isn’t enough to induce your trust, the 5-Year Money Back Guarantee should be. That means in 5 long years, you can return the Aqua Elegante 6-function luxury shower head for a full refund, no questions asked.
But I doubt you would need to invoke the policy, judging by the feedback the product has received so far.
2. AQUADANCE 3312 – BEST HANDHELD SHOWER HEAD
The majority of customer reviews spoke well of its performance and were surprised at how affordable it is for the value it offers.
- Elegant and modern design
- Various spray settings
- Excellent Water Saving mode
- Minimal maintenance
- Simple set-up
- Lifetime warranty
- Relatively small sprayer face
- Easy to damage ABS parts
The 3312 has an ABS plastic casing and a variety of great looking finishes, which includes: brushed nickel, traditional chrome-plating, or oil-rubbed bronze.
The diameter of the sprayer face is about 3.5-inch. This is on the smaller side so the coverage can be fairly disappointing if you like to have full showers. Nonetheless, you will have the benefit of getting greater water pressure.
There are six water spray settings available that can be flexibly changed in-between with the click-lever dial: Power Rain, Power Mist, Massage, Rain/Massage, Rain/Mist, and Water Saving Pause Mode.
The company has done the Water Saving Pause Mode very well. This mode can cut down on the showerhead’s water consumption, but the quality of the shower remains the same. As a result, for people needing greater water efficiency like RV-ers, this showerhead is a great choice.
No special tools are required for installation and no need for technical knowledge, either. Just follow all of the steps in the user’s manual and it can be set up in ten minutes or so.
The showerhead features silicone, rub-clean jets. You can rub on the nozzles with your fingers or a small toothbrush and easily remove clogs of solid mineral that can build inside the showerhead after a while.
In case the showerhead breaks down, it is covered with a lifetime warranty policy, so you shouldn’t worry too much about defects or damages while using.
3. Delta 75152 – BEST DELTA HIGH FLOW SHOWER HEAD
When we talk about plumbing fixtures, Delta Faucet is a familiar and reputable name. Many of their satisfactory products are probably sitting in your home right now. The Delta 75152 we take to review today is no different, giving solid performance of which it is expected.
- Good pressure
- Saves water (WaterSense)
- Compact and light
- Unique wave shower
- Good coverage
This is a wall-mounted, 2-setting shower head made completely of plastic. It is compact and light, coming with with the all-so-easy universal installation, making it suitable for portable usage. If your usual shower experience in motels or hotels is not what you’d mind changing, packing a Delta 75152 is not such a bad move.
The shower head can turn any tedious shower into a much more intense one with satisfying pressure and spray pattern – a unique wave-like water stream, which has triple the coverage of standard shower head (in accordance with EPA WaterSense Specification).
You can also turn it down a little if the need arises, whether to save water or to change to a soother flow. There is a water saving setting, labeled and approved by Watersense EPA, producing a gentler water flow but bigger droplets, retaining the usual experience with less water.
Not exactly your typical low flow shower head, but it does cut down water consumption nonetheless.
The spray holes are also self-cleaning so that build-up from hard water won’t be much of a problem. To top that, the Delta 75152 is backed by a lifetime item and finish warranty.
4. WASSA WS1201 – BEST HIGH PRESSURE SHOWER HEAD
The WASSA 3-inch has remarkable high pressure performance packed inside of a modern and beautiful design. This is the reason why the showerhead has risen quickly in the top-selling chart and is loved by consumers.
- Beautiful, modern design
- Great high pressure performance
- Easy to install
- Simple maintenance
- Lifetime warranty policies
- Flimsy ABS plastic construction
- Only one default spray setting
The sprayer face is only 3 inches in diameter, so the coverage can be relatively lackluster. Nonetheless, the small sprayer face can condense effectively the inflow water to become exceptionally strong.
The maximum flow rate of the shower is standard at 2.5 GPM.
It is constructed from ABS plastic. While this serves to keep it affordable, as previously mentioned, it won’t be very durable. You have two finishing options to pick from, either standard silver (chrome-plating) or oil-rubbed bronze.
Unfortunately, there is only one spray setting on this showerhead and cannot be adjusted. But the one spray setting that this showerhead has, it does well enough that most customers don’t mind the lacking.
The thread design is a standard G1/2-inch, which should fit on all conventional shower arms. It doesn’t require special tools to install nor it needs you to have special technical knowledge. Every step required to set the shower up is illustrated inside the user’s manual.
The WASSA 3-inch featured silicone nozzles. This makes it easy to remove the mineral build-ups that can negatively affect your showerhead’s performance. Rubbing the nozzles with your fingers or a small toothbrush and clogs would be cleared.
The showerhead is covered with a lifetime warranty for faulty parts.
The showerhead is covered with a lifetime warranty for faulty parts.
5. Speakman S-2005-HB – BEST MASSAGE SHOWER HEAD
Longing for the holidays so you can enjoy the spa? Well, the Speakman S-2005-HB won’t be able to perfectly replicate the spa, but its pulsating massage can mimic closely enough, to such an extent that the stress built up during the day is destined to disappear. It is a recommended-for-hotel shower head, after all.
- Hotel quality
- High pressure
- Low flow models available (WaterSense)
- Good massage setting
- ABS plastic
- Control might not be good as expected
“What makes it so good?” here’s what: the shower head is a high pressure model that features a massage setting. Supporting that is the fact that it’s built properly, therefore performing as such. It’s not easy to come across a product that can pull off such a combination so easily.
As mentioned in the buying guide, Speakman is a company with decades of experience in developing shower fixtures, so rest assured that the quality is nothing to be concerned about. What should be of concern is if what the product offers matches with what you’re looking for. So let’s talk more about its traits.
The S-2005-HB is made of plastic, finished with polished chrome, brushed nickel, polished brass and brushed chrome. Plastic is not preferable to me, personally. However, user’s feedback reflects next-to-zero regards to its construction quality, which aftentimes means that it’s not of the cheap sorts.
Unlike standard products, it has self-cleaning plungers instead of nozzles, creating a different feel with a distinctive spray pattern. Its 360 degree plunger control is also a fresh touch to the game.
Every little change to the knob means a slightly different setting. Technically, there are a total of 58 observable patterns, summed up in 3 major functions: combination, full spray and pulsating massage settings.
Other than the standard 2.5 gpm model, the S-2005-HP also comes in WaterSense certified models for low flow showers, performing at 1.75 and 2.0 gpm.
In short, the Speakman S-2005-HB is a hotel quality wall mount high pressure massaging shower head. It would be a waste not to add it to your list of candidates.
6. AquaDance 3328/3370 – BEST DUAL SHOWER HEAD
It’s such a shame that we have only one spot for combo shower heads. There are quite a few good ones available to pick up, but only one of them can be the best. And you’re looking at it: the AquaDance 3328/3370.
- Good coverage
- Multi-function on shower head and hand shower
- Prone-to-damage ABS
- Possibly stuck handheld bracket
You’re probably wondering why there are two model numbers. To put it simply, they’re essentially identical.
They are both adjustable shower heads and bear the same excellent craftsmanship; their hand showers and 7” shower heads share the same design and functions. The only difference is that they come in different setups.
The 3328 is a one piece combo with the handheld and the head on one bracket. The 3370, on the other, has the handheld sliding on a 28“ slide bar for convenience. It depends on your preference and bathroom space/style that which setup is more preferable to the other.
But, the quality is the same. Both are with ABS plastic casing, 60” stainless steel hose and brass nuts. For a two-in-one, plastic makes a lot of sense. A combo is quite heavy on its own. To cut weight in material is to cut pressure on the shower arm, which is a good move.
The shower settings and water diversion mechanics are also alike. Each of the handhelds and heads has 6 settings: power rain, power mist, rain mist, water saving pause (patented) and two massage settings. Water can be diverted between them with a turn of a knob, allowing for 3 modes: head only, handheld only and head-handheld.
Installation is a tad more complicated compared to one-piece shower heads, but simple nonetheless. No tools needed! It will most likely take you no more than 15 minutes. This I can even bet money on.
However, do remember that the 3370 requires at least 30” of wall space between the over head shower arm and the mixer. It’s for the 28” slide bar, as you can guess.
The Aquadance 3328 and 3370 each is covered with a lifetime limited warranty.
7. Moen S6320 Velocity – BEST RAIN SHOWER HEAD
Our first full metal shower head in our list so far, and it is a high-end one, featuring in several buying guides. The rainfall, wall mount Moen S6320 Velocity shower head is what you’d like if you enjoy a large-coverage shower with simplicity and durability in design and performance.
- Brass construction
- Corrosion and tarnishing finishes
- Wide coverage
- Self-pressurizing technology
- Very high-priced
The 8” head offers a fulfilling full body shower experience. Whether it’s installed over head or at an angle, the rainfall will still feel full and submerging. It’s thanks to the Immersion self-pressurizing technology that the water streams never seem to be lacking.
The item provides two spray modes in total – the rain fall and the concentrated rinse, controlled by a simple switch to the side of the shower head. All will seem smooth if your house is one with sufficient water pressure. Should it be otherwise, you’d do well to remove the flow regulator.
The shower head is 100% metal with a large portion of its entirety being brass. Brass, for bathroom fixtures, is believed to be the best material for its comparably low cost and high corrosion resistance, not to mention the resistant properties of the finishes, especially brushed nickel.
Regarding design, there’s quite a particular look to it – a combination between vintage design and contemporary touches. Together with 4 different finishes, namely brushed gold, brushed nickel, oil rubbed bronze and chrome, not only will it fit in well with various styles, but it will for a long time without tarnishing.
The down side to the Moen S6320 Velocity is its price. It’s probably the most highly priced in the whole list. Also, the flow regulator is not exactly easy to remove, unlike the Aqua Elegante above. But it’s not too difficult either.
If none of its said weaknesses bothers you, and you appreciate the quality of a high-end shower head, this should a wonderful choice.
Moen S6320 Velocity is covered with Moen’s Limited Lifetime Warranty against leaks, drips, and finish defects.
