Best Space Heaters 2021

Quick! What’s your first thing that pops into your mind upon hearing the word “winter”?

Children would say “Christmas presents”, “Santa Claus”, or “snowball fights”.

Normal folks would respond with “holiday breaks”, “snow shoveling”, or “family reunion”.

Game of Throne fanatics would reply with “…is coming”.

Marvel aficionados’ answer would be “Soldier”.

Somewhere in there, there will be common winter cuisine-related keywords like “stuffed turkey”, “eggnog”, and “chestnuts”.

Realists, me included, would simply go with “freezing”, “chilly”, “frigid”. If asked what we would reward ourselves with, it’d be “a thick blankie”, “warmest fireplace”, “best space heater”, “wool socks”. Mundane, yet realistic answers.

Despite all the seasonal delights, it seems the winter woes could spoil the holiday spirit and all the fun for everyone involved. A sudden drop in temperature can put a damper on this supposedly joyous period of the year.

Speaking of coldness, only when your teeth chatter and the goosebumps show up do you realize your favorite blankie isn’t giving you enough warmth. Each person has a different way of dealing with it: an extra layer of fabric, or better yet, the assistance from an external heat source.

People have long battled against frosty winters, and we have made it through every single one of them (except for one particularly sad case of a little girl with the matchsticks). Our weapons of choice get better over time, varying in size and from place to place.

From rudimentary bonfires and fireplaces with chimneys, we invented radiators and electric heaters.

The Japanese take great pride in their signature heating tables called kotatsu.

The Spaniards resort to their timeless brasero whenever winter is around the corner.

The Iranian families gather around the korsi, simply to relax, converse, and chill by its warmth*.

The Finnish are so associated with their sauna culture that it is merely impossible to mention one without referring to the other.

Not to be outdone by others, space heaters have taken some pretty drastic changes over the years to further accommodate consumers’ needs during the colder months.

Space Heaters: (Not) A Heater in Space

I know. Shocker, right? Who would have thought such was the case of lexical ambiguity?

So, what’s so hot about space heaters? (no pun intended)

Jokes aside, a space heater chiefly focuses on warming up a targeted area, unlike the central heating unit, which aims to spread the heat all over your home.

The thing is, you don’t have to heat up the entire house.

Why waste electricity on sections of the house where hardly anyone ever goes—namely the attic, garage, basement, etc. — when you can just focus on heating the spaces which you and your family members are actually occupying?

Cheaper: Across the pond, the Centre for Sustainable Energy did a highly detailed report on certain types of space heaters’ efficiency and the cost of running them, and found space heaters to be the cheaper option. Of course, the prices are subject to change over time and place, but the reasoning stands.

Therefore, space heaters are a much cheaper alternative to central heating systems. But just because it’s cheaper doesn’t mean it is any less effective. In fact, some pack a heating capacity of up to 40,000 BTUs, reported by www.energy.gov.

Not only are they more energy-saving, but space heaters are also more versatile in portability. When moving to new houses (or just moving rooms), one can simply unplug, and just shift it to the desired position.

Models with casters are a blessing for house movers, interior designers, and the elderly, as they can be moved around with ease. Even better, light models with firm grip handles are convenient to pick up and carry with you in case you move elsewhere.

Another plus point is that they are utilized only in the winter, so you don’t have to service them all year long. If unused, you can simply unplug and keep them in the basement, the attic, or inside a closet.

Safety is one of the chief concerns when it comes to household heating.

The Department of Energy quoted up to a yearly 25,000 residential fires in relation to misuse and mishandling of all types of heaters. That’s not mentioning the consequential 300 deaths and an addition of 6000 cases of burn injuries stemmed from touching the heating outlet.

Electrocution, carbon monoxide poisoning are just a few more links in a chain of heater-related calamities.

That being the case in the past, space heater manufacturers are tirelessly striving for new safety measures. They place the utmost importance upon the customers’ well-being and interest. Every product has to go through rigorous testing procedures, with any faulty ones rejected or discarded.

What To Look At Before Getting Yourself A Space Heater

Don’t be sweet-talked by salespeople with the gift of the gab. There has got to be a reason why those shady heaters remain unsold for quite some time. And frankly, those that do the job well don’t need colorful words or advertising: they prove it with their performance.

That said, you ought to have a set of standards before bringing a new heater home. Below are my suggestions:

Most capable space heaters are available at under 100 bucks, though there are some that go beyond this price range.

If you insist on a regular space heater with basic functions and features, then it’s your lucky day, as there is a plethora to choose from (we’ll get to that section later in this article).

Or, budget allowing, you can target one of those high-end heaters with enhanced technology.

Either way, make sure that you’re getting one that’s good bang for your buck.

Types Of Heating

Based on size, we can classify space heaters into three categories: personal heater, small heater, and full-sized heater

Personal heaters can be placed on office desks, under the tables, reading tables… for a sole receiver’s comfort. The warmth is directly aimed at those/the person in front of it and the result is instantly felt.

Small heaters can warm up a small to medium-sized room, depending on its specifications and capacity. The heat waves can either be direct and instantaneous, or gradually felt over time.

Full-sized heaters can distribute a balmy atmosphere for a medium-sized to a larger room. Just like their smaller counterparts, the warm air is either instantly or gradually felt.

Depending on what your particular need is, you can choose the one that suits you best.

What is the heating element? Does it run on electricity, oil, or gas? Does it distribute warm air via convection, conduction or radiation? How much power does it consume per hour, and how does that translate to my monthly utility bill?

Don’t be shy to ask the salesperson for clarification. After all, it’s your soon-to-be space heater, and you would want to know everything about it. The clearer the information, the easier your decision whether to get it or not.

Room Size

Area coverage depends not just on how far the space heaters can deliver the warm air, but on how big the room is as well.

If you live in a cramped up student dorm, a tiny studio apartment or a condo, there’s absolutely no need for a full-size heater or a central heating system.

On the other hand, it’s wise to find a powerful heater that can build up heat quickly and retain the warmth within an open or large area.

Safety Concerns

As stated above, safety is the number one consideration inside the customers’ mind. You’d feel much safer with ones that are imbued with multiple safety features, including cool-touch surface, reinforced power cord, and tipping safety switches.

If your room is well insulated, there’s no need for a big and fancy space heater. Look for ones that have a fan, also known as “fan-forced” space heaters. It will generate enough warm air, and circulate around the room without using excessive amounts of electricity.

If your space heater has a built-in thermostat, you can unburden yourself of manually monitoring the temperature. Just set to the desired temperature, and the rest can be left to the heater itself. It will automatically shut off once the desired warmth is reached.

Adjustable Louvers

You want a space heater that can oscillate on a wider angle, or at least has adjustable grilles to redirect the airflow. You might also want them to be cool to the touch when adjusting by hand.

Noise Level

For bedrooms, living rooms with TVs, and reading rooms, the sound of a space heater running can be quite distracting, if not unbearable. You might want to opt for ones that are whisper-quiet, which is a strong point of those radiant space heaters (we will explain more at the bottom).

Also, there is the choice of brand. For more details of what brand to go with, you can refer to the brand section at the bottom of this article.

It may seem like a lot to consider, but once you are clear on your needs, finding the right space heater for you should be a cinch.

Now, with delight and without further ado, here are our cherry-picked space heaters to help you on your way!

1. Lasko 6462 Full-Circle Warmth – Best Space Heater of 2021

To vie for the “Best Overall” position, the shortlisted candidates here went through a meticulous selection process.

Lasko 6462 Full Circle Warmth Best Space Heater review

  • Affordable
  • Heats area quickly
  • Adjustable built-in thermostat
  • Portable
  • Built-in carry handle
  • Digital display
  • Remote-controllable
  • Easy-to-clean filter
  • ETL listed
  • Overheating protection and cool-touch surface

  • Small outlet
  • No timer

For some models, I merely cast my gaze upon them once, turned away, and never looked back.

For others, it was an internal struggle, for I could not single out one perfect space heater from so many well-made ones.

Needless to say, I had no difficulty ruling out certain options, but I also had to make gut-wrenching eliminations among my personal favorites.

In the end, it all boils down to the Lasko 6462.

Lasko has often delivered with its highly touted products, and this one is no exception.

The Lasko 6462 has 3 different settings, fitting pretty much all residential chambers of various sizes. Its blower technology provides more powerful and concentrated heating, providing comfort for users.

With options of 90, 170 and an eye-popping 360 degrees of rotation, Lasko’s 6462 model can be used as the core heating unit, radiating heat throughout the room. This full-circle space heater will ensure equal heating for even the furthest corners of the room.

Capable of covering up to 300 square feet, this heater will make its presence clearly felt, wrapping its warmth around those inside the room with a wonderfully comfy and toasty atmosphere. With its built-in thermostat, you can rest assured that your room will stay evenly cozy.

Also worth mentioning is how quiet the Lasko 6462 runs. You’ll barely notice its presence thanks to the near whisper-silence during operation. Don’t just take my word for it. Folks at Consumer Report did the testing themselves, and this little space heater ranks among the top 5 quietest space heaters.

Servicing this space heater should be a walk in a park. Open the access panel, take out the filter, vacuum-clean it for 10 minutes — 15 if you’re meticulous — and put it back. Simple as that. A quarterly clean-up is highly recommended, as the built-up dust and lint could shorten the heater’s life span, as well as quickly overheating it.

Speaking of overheating, engineers at Lasko have equipped this heater with various safeguard measures: overheating is no longer a concern, even if the fan is left running for an extended period of time, thanks to the overheating protection. Furthermore, the cool-touch surface is another plus point, particularly for children and pets.

The only thing irking me is the lack of a timer, which could be troublesome occasionally when I forget to switch it off. Even though it’s cheaper, I still don’t want to leave it running when I don’t need it!

A well-made, well-rounded space heater like the Lasko 6462 is a rare gem among other good residential heaters out there on the marker.

2. Pelonis NY1507-14A Space Heater – Best For Large Rooms

Behold this mighty beast!

Warming up an entire spacious area is no joke. It could gobble up your electricity. Well, that’s not the case for the Pelonis NY1507-14A.

Pelonis NY1507 14A Best Space Heater For Large Rooms review

  • Affordable
  • Digital programmable thermostat
  • LCD display
  • Remote-controllable
  • Easy to move around
  • Tipping killswitch and overheating protection

  • Loud beeping noise when adjusting
  • Takes quite some time to heat up the whole room

Using 3 heating options in conjunction with 5 temperature settings, this heater can create a combination of concentrated and powerful warmth for rooms as big as a dining hall. Utilizing high energy efficiency and a self-regulating thermostat, it sure will provide a cozy atmosphere for everyone around.

Of course, built-in safety tipping killswitch is included with this space heater, considering oil leakage can lead to fire and burning in case it gets knocked over*. To further guarantee the customers’ safety, overheating protection is also included.

What catches the attention of buyers is how immensely powerful and efficient this space heater is. It can generate snug air and circulate an enormous zone, yet it is still energy-saving.

What I particularly like about this Honeywell model is the caster wheels. Capable of doing full-circle swiveling, these 4 wheels can make things much easier when it comes to moving the heater. Sometimes, I would shift this space heater from room to room, or store it away when spring arrives, and the casters’ presence was very much appreciated.

Quiet as it is during operation, it is regrettably loud when making adjustments. The blare of beeping noise can be uncomfortable, if not unbearable to some people with sensitive ears.

Another thing is it takes a while to heat up the room. Now for me, it’s nothing more than a slight nuisance, but sadly, the same cannot be said for the impatient users. That’s my complaint regarding this otherwise wonderful piece of machinery.

This space heater can send out warmth left, right, and center. So, for homeowners in search of a powerful piece of heating equipment with a powerful blow, you now know what to look for.

3. Honeywell HHF360V – Best Electric Space Heater

It’s a Honeywell HHF360V.

So, what’s special about this heater?

It’s a Honeywell.

Enough said.

Honeywell HHF360V Best Electric Space Heater review

  • Affordable
  • Quick heating
  • Full-circle surrounding heat technology
  • Protection against tipping over and overheating
  • Cool-touch handle
  • Adjustable thermostat
  • Easy to use

  • No screen display
  • No remote control
  • No timer setting

Honeywell has long earned the trust of customers with its high-quality and reasonably priced products, and this one is another prime example.

Using fan-forced convection as the chief method of delivering warm air, this Honeywell model can build up heat quickly for instant usage.

The manual control is straightforward and easy to use. But the lack of a digital display makes it cumbersome for those unfamiliar with it.

Though not easy on the eye, this space heater is more than capable of generating and distributing a toasty ambience, thanks to its 360-degree of air outlet. Furthermore, when on Low mode, the Honeywell HHF360V does not require electricity to run. Instead, it uses natural convection, thus being a wise choice for energy-conscious consumers.

Regarding safety, Honeywell has made an all-out effort to ensure the user’s comfort and safety. Tip-over switch, overheating protection, and a firm cool-touch handle are standard safety measures. What sets this model apart from others is the thermally insulated wiring and the reinforced wire connections to prevent unwanted fires and electrocutions.

While its look may not attract the eye of viewers, this space heater redeems itself with its performance and capacity.

4. Lasko 755320 Space Heater – Best For Bedrooms

Wait, another Lasko?

Wow, 4 space heaters into this article and Lasko has accounted for half of them already.

Lasko 755320 Best Space Heater For Bedrooms review

  • Affordable
  • Quick heating
  • Overheating protection and cool-touch housing
  • ETL listed
  • Built-in carry handle
  • Adjustable thermostat
  • Remote-controllable
  • Screen display with color-coded indicator lights
  • Very quiet
  • Wide angle oscillation
  • Safe to use near drapes and curtains

  • A rather hot outlet
  • Rather bulky

The Lasko 755320 not only excels at heating up an entire room but also warms up those in front of it in a matter of just mere seconds. This aspect is highly regarded by researchers at Consumer Report.

Furthermore, this space heater is also noted for its maximum 8-hour timer and the near whisper-silence. When in operation, your beauty sleep will not be interrupted. Compared to other models, this one produces much lower noise while running, ensuring your precious slumber.

When covering yourself from head to toe with your favorite blankie isn’t giving you enough warmth during the colder months of the year, this space heater will come to the rescue.

With its self-regulating ceramic heating element, the Lasko 755320 will deliver a cozy yet concentrated flow of warm air. You can snuggle down into your bed, falling into a very deep and sound sleep, and let the gentle warmth engulf you, ensuring a night of sweet dreams.

Once tucked in on a cold night, it can be excruciatingly frustrating having to leave your comfort zone and answer the call of nature, let alone adjusting the heater. Luckily, you won’t have to. The remote control will be of much-needed-convenience later, though unfortunately there’s no remote-controllable solution for your bladder situation.

Despite having overheating protection and a cool touch surface, test results from Consumer Report indicate that the surface of the outlet is rather hot, though not to the degree that can lead to burning. However, this is a concern that needs further addressing in the future.

Don’t sleep on the Lasko 755320, as a fan this well-made will not be available if you dawdle for too long. This space heater is an excellent choice for the bedroom.

5. Pro Breeze Ceramic Space Heater – Best Small Space Heater

When you’re in a space where there’s hardly any room to even swing a cat, finding a spot for a heater can be tricky. Most heaters would eat up a certain amount of space that can.

Pro Breeze Ceramic Best Small Space Heater review

  • Affordable
  • Overheating and tipping protection
  • Wide angle oscillation
  • Portable via built-in carry handle
  • Lightweight
  • Built-in thermostat
  • Builds up warmth quickly

  • No timer setting
  • No remote control

Well, not the Pro Breeze Ceramic Space Heater.

For those cramped dormitories, tiny studio apartments, or modest condominiums, this space heater can emit enough warmth while not invading the already restricted area of your place.

Using a ceramic heating element of up to 1500W, this Pro Breeze heater will build up heat immediately for your spontaneous need.

With its diminutive stature, this heater can be placed on your work desk, by your bedside, under the table, etc. With the built-in thermostat, it will self-regulate to match the desired warmth, offering the optimal heating efficiency and comfort level.

On the other hand, it’s quite a shame that this model doesn’t come with a remote control or have an automatic shutoff feature. But hey, at least it still gets the job done, so that’s fine by me.

Small in size does not mean weaker in performance, and the Pro Breeze Ceramic Space Heater is a shining example of this notion.

6. Honeywell HCE840B – Best Energy Efficient Space Heater

The Honeywell HCE840B is a fan-favorite for various reasons.

Honeywell HCE840B Best Energy Efficient Space Heater review

  • Affordable
  • Various settings
  • Programmable thermostat
  • Tip-over killswitch, overheating protection & cool-touch housing
  • 2 overheat sensors & backup cut-off fuse
  • Thermally insulated & reinforced wiring
  • Firm, sturdy base

  • No remote control
  • Short timer

Programmed with a diverse selection of modes, it offers 6 customized heat settings that can satisfy most customer’s needs for warm air. The ceramic heating element is more than capable of generating warmth to heat up people, rooms or floors, depending on the user’s current need.

Honeywell has always prided itself on designing highly efficient household equipment, and this space heater is no exception. It can provide soothing warmth while not gobbling up your power. On particularly cold days, you can crank it up a notch or two, and the result is almost instant.

You can breathe a little bit easier, knowing that Honeywell has made this space heater practically foolproof, including all the basic necessary safety measures. They also make the base more sturdy to prevent accidental tipping, as well as insulating and reinforcing the wiring.

With that said, the Honeywell HCE840 is not without flaw. I just thought that it would be better if it had a remote control, for those lazy days when I don’t want to leave my bed.

Once you have bought yourself this Honeywell model, you can be worry-free about it gobbling up your wattage. This is a good heating choice to unburden your monthly utility bill.

7. Comfort Zone Ceramic Space Heater: Best Portable Space Heater

Is there any powerful yet compact space heater?

Why, yes. There are lightweight yet capable space heaters, like this Comfort Zone fella here.

Comfort Zone Ceramic Best Portable Space Heater review

  • Affordable
  • Lightweight & easy to carry around
  • Adjustable thermostat
  • Simple design
  • Tip-over safety switch and overheating protection
  • Built-in carry handle
  • UL, ETL, & CSA Listed
  • CE Certified
  • NOM & SAA Approved

  • No remote control
  • No timer setting

Utilizing a ceramic heating element, the Comfort Zone Ceramic Heater can pack such powerful heating capacity like full-sized ones.

Not only on-par with the big boys regarding heating ability, but the fan-forced convection will also create a balmy atmosphere in just minutes, and can disperse it within a small to medium-sized room.

Thanks to its modest size, it can fit almost anywhere, be it by the nightstand, under your desk, in the garage, etc. No matter where it is placed, warmth is always guaranteed.

Then yet again, the lack of remote control and a timer upset me no end. I wish these features, or lack thereof, get figured out before the next model comes out.

Don’t be dissuaded by its modest size, because it can blow your socks off (no pun intended) with its capacity. It’s mind-boggling something this small can dole out such warmth.

8. Lasko Ceramic Space Heater – Best Indoor Space Heater

We’re well into the latter half of this article, and a Lasko still finds its way here.

Lasko Ceramic Best Indoor Space Heater review

  • Affordable
  • ETL listed
  • Compact
  • Overheating protection and cool-touch surface

  • No remote control
  • Short timer

That speaks volumes of how well-made and high-quality their products are.

1500 watts of warmth will surely keep the cold away at bay. Meh. The space heaters above have roughly the same capacity.

Its compact look and design can fit in almost any room inside a house, be it the living room, bedroom, garage, or even the kitchen. Big deal. The space heaters above can also fit in tiny places.

But what sets this masterpiece apart from others is that it can be placed inside a bathroom.

In the winter, the bathroom can get colder than usual, especially at night. Sometimes when nature calls, you have to answer. To make your bladder gladder, you reluctantly make your way to the bathroom, but the ceramic surface is too frigid to sit on.

That’s where the Lasko Ceramic Space Heater comes to the rescue.

Equipped with the ALCI safety plug for bathroom use, this space heater is water-resistant, so you can position it or bring it along with you to the bathroom. It is well-covered and shielded against moisture and steam, so the chance of electrocution is reduced to virtually nil.

No longer will you have to succumb to the mercilessly freezing toilet seats and bathtubs… Never again!

As to what I would do to improve this space heater, if I were the manufacturer, I would add a remote control.

This space heater is an indoor must-have.

9. Dr. Infrared Heater DR968 Original Heater – Best Infrared Space Heater

Of the space heaters featured in this piece of writing, the Dr. Infrared Heater DR968 Original Heater is a special one.

Dr Infrared Heater DR968 Best Infrared Space Heater review

  • Dual heating system
  • Built-in thermostat
  • Overheating and tip-over protection
  • Automatic shut-off
  • Quiet
  • UL listed

  • Bulky
  • Slightly expensive

Marvel at this monster.

With a dual-heating system using infrared quartz tube and PTC, this bad boy can build up 60% more heat compared to its competitors, generating up to 5200 BTUs in the process.

With no exposed heating elements, parents and pet owners can let out a sigh of relief, as the chance of their loved ones getting accidentally burnt has significantly minimized.

Combining the energy-efficient infrared heating and the comfort of convection heating, the DR968 can quickly warm those in need, while gradually heating up the surrounding area.

Also mention-worthy is its modern blower that can treat a larger amount of air volume for a more compressed, quieter, and more focused flow than any other space heater.

Oh, I almost forgot about the caster wheels. They are very helpful, as the weight and the bulky design can hinder moving this space heater to other places.

Granted that it can be daunting for price-conscious customers, but this big boy will be worth every single cent you spend on it.

10. Lasko Designer Series 6435 – Best Affordable Space Heater

We opened this article with a Lasko, so it’s only common courtesy to close it with another Lasko.

Lasko Designer Series Best Affordable Space Heater review

  • Affordable
  • Effective heating
  • Built-in carry handle
  • Overheating protection & cool-touch exterior
  • ETL listed
  • Adjustable thermostat
  • LED display

  • No carry handle
  • Weird color

With 3 quiet settings, it is seemingly just like most space heaters. But what sets it apart from the others is that it gets the seal of approval from Consumer Reports for effective heating. Not too bad for a small powerhouse.

With the heating core using ceramic and a 1500 watt capacity, the Lasko 6435 can generate warmth almost immediately, radiating a pleasant sensation forward to those in front of it.

All that heating power is packed in such a tiny design. It’s such a miraculous work of engineering ingenuity, at a very affordable price.

Last but definitely not least, if it were up to me to better this space heater, I would have added a firm-grip carry handle, and would paint it in a more conventional color .

A heater this inexpensive but effective is selling like hot cakes (no pun intended). So hurry up while stocks last!

Best Types Of Space Heaters

Earlier in the article, I did mention about certain types of space heaters. We classified them into size.

Now, in this section, we will delve deeper into even more types of space heaters.

If we classify space heaters according to the heating method, there are:

  • Radiant space heaters: used for spot heating, meaning they can warm up the small area in front of the outlet quickly. This type is usually small, and they are mainly used for small places, such as offices, bedrooms, under or on desks, garages. Infrared space heaters are a part of this type as well. Their chief focus is on the people, not the air.
  • Convective space heaters: They adopt a fan to disperse the heat around. They work well with insulated houses and closed areas. Even after switching off, the warmth is still present in the air. They generate heat very quickly. They focus on heating the air, which in turn heats the people.
  • Oil-filled space heaters: use electricity to warm the diathermic oil. The heat coming from the oil will then transfer throughout the fins and into the room via natural convection. They can warm up larger areas, but this requires more time. There’s no exposed heating element, so they are relatively safe to touch. And they are quiet.

Now, if we classify them according to heating elements:

  • Infrared space heaters: they use electromagnetic radiation coming from quartz bulbs or tubes. They work for almost all areas.
  • Convection space heaters: an electric element heats up, then the fan disperses the heat. They are much faster compared to other types.
  • Natural gas: these heaters are cheaper than those using electricity. Inside these heaters, there are flames which will warm the air. But carbon monoxide poisoning can happen if mishandled or operating in enclosed areas,
  • Ceramic heating element: these heaters generate heat via wires, then the heat passes through ceramic plates.
  • Electric: these heaters use resistors to generate heat. All electric space heaters are 100% energy efficient.
  • Micathermic: these heaters use a mica-covered heating element. These elements are usually thinner, lighter.

So, there’s no definitive “best type of space heater”. Each has its own pros and cons. Therefore. the best thing you can do is to learn the difference between each type, and decide for yourself which suits you best.
