Best Upright Vacuums in 2020

An upright vacuum is a familiar sight in households across the country. With plenty of cleaning power to spare and a design that’s perfect for high-intensity cleaning, upright vacuums are a classic staple among consumers.

This buying guide has a few tricks you can use to find the best upright vacuum for you. We also have several recommendations of great uprights for you to browse through in the review section.

What Are Upright Vacuums Good For?

If you have a large house, an upright vacuum makes for a good investment. Because you can stand upright and push the vacuum forward without bending down, your body won’t be achy and sore, even after a long cleaning session.

Besides excellent suction power, uprights are adaptable enough to handle most floor types. They can handle dirt, dust, and debris on all forms of bare floors like hardwood and vinyl.

Most uprights are shipped with a turbo brush, which gives them nearly unrivaled carpet performance once combined with their high suction power. If your house has area rugs or dense carpetings, an upright is the way to go.

How Mobile is an Upright Vacuum?

Mobility is one of the most important aspects of a good vacuum. It is a particularly sought-after value in houses with stairs.

Though in the past, upright vacuums have not been known for their compactness and mobility. A lot has changed since then.

Lighter materials, such as high-strength plastic, reduce the average weight of modern uprights significantly. The motor body has soft wheels for more natural movement. And most have a swivel head that allows you to steer the nozzle deep into crevices around the house.

In some unique models like the Shark Lift-Away you can detach the motor body from the main assembly. You can carry the motor up the stairs and vacuum with the attached cleaning wand without having to bring the sizable main assembly with you.

Overall, you no longer have to worry too much about mobility with modern uprights. Though they still have certain limitations (bulkier than other types of vacuum), they won’t be too difficult to handle. For most people, the high performance more than makes up for any slight inconvenience.

How to Buy the Best Upright Vacuum?

Corded vs. Cordless

A corded upright vacuum draws power from your house’s primary grid with a wall plug. Thanks to this, the motor can generate more stable and consistent suction power.

Contrary to popular belief, you won’t always get higher suction power. Suction strength depends on many other factors like the size and rating of the motor and the vacuum’s brush. Regardless of whether your vacuum gets extra power from the mains, all corded uprights tend to pack high power. They are able to handle bare floors to thick carpetings with ease.

The inconvenience lies in the cord. Your cleaning range will always be limited to the nearest electrical outlet. If your house doesn’t have a lot of outlets, handling a corded upright will turn annoying quickly.

A cordless upright vacuum uses a rechargeable battery to operate the motor. Since you’re no longer tied to an electrical outlet, a cordless upright gives you far more flexibility to clean wherever you want in the house.

The trade-off for flexibility is performance.

Due to the battery’s limitations and the need to conserve battery life, the power fed to the motor is less consistent. As a result, suction power is also quite limited compared to its corded counterpart. Only the most premium cordless is equipped with the motor power and battery to rival their corded counterparts’ suction strength.

Weight and Size

Uprights can weigh anywhere from 8 pounds to as heavy as 18 pounds. Because they were designed for maximum cleaning power, manufacturers aren’t shy about equipping them with the biggest motor they can make.

It is not just the motor, other things can add up to the weight. For example, cordless vacuums can be weighed down by the heavy battery. Meanwhile, corded vacuums have the reinforced power cord dragging it down.

Fortunately, many modern uprights have incorporated features like Lift-Away and handheld – stick vac convertibility that can help shed extra weight. If you have medical conditions such as arthritis where poundage is important, vacuums with these additional features are worth looking into.

The bulkier the vacuum, the more awkward it will be to maneuver in cramped spaces or around tight corners. Fortunately, most uprights have crevice tools to extend their reach. Additionally, large vacuums are infamous for being difficult to store. Their sizable profile can make it somewhat inconvenient to find a suitable storage place.

Battery Life

Most modern cordless vacuums are equipped with a Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack. It can carry more charge than older battery types as well as being more reliable and safer. The only disadvantage to Li-ion is that it is expensive to manufacture. But that still did not stop Li-ion from becoming the most popular battery type on the market, according to researchers from the European Commission and a US-based research firm.

Some cordless models have a Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery. It offers roughly the same power performance, reliability, and safety as Li-ion. However, NiMH batteries are more vulnerable to “memory effect,” which can affect the long-term performance of the cell. They are slower to charge back to full than Li-ion, as well.

Avoid old battery types like Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) or Lead Acid batteries. They are less reliable and generally have more mediocre performance.

Filtration System

A vacuum’s filtration system helps capture harmful particles in the air flowing through the vacuum like fine dust, allergens, and airborne bacteria.

HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are the most efficient of all filter types. They can capture up to 99.9% of all particles as small as 0.3 microns. If your family has respiratory problems or allergies, lock onto a model equipped with this filtration type.

Notably, there are many pieces of research into the effectiveness of HEPA filtration systems against viruses such as the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Multiple studies conducted by the WHO, institutional researchers, and independent researchers have concluded that HEPA-grade filters can lower the viral load inside the environment. A HEPA-equipped vacuum can help decrease the risk to you and your family in the home.

Before you buy, make sure to check the user’s manual for test results on the filtration efficiency of the filter. Many manufacturers still market their filters as “HEPA” even though it can only capture 80% to 90% of small particles traveling through the filter. This can be a dangerous mistake to make, especially since your health is on the line.

If you currently own an old vacuum that does not have a filter, you should find a replacement immediately. Filterless vacuums are even more damaging to your health than not vacuuming at all, since they disturb and spread dust, dirt, and allergens throughout the house, according to a study.

Most manufacturers ship their vacuums with an assortment of tools, like a crevice tool, brushes, upholstery tool, and sometimes special tools for pet hair.

The shipping detail will usually contain all of the tools your vacuum model has. If it doesn’t ship with what you need, the manufacturer’s online store will often have them available to buy.

1. Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional NV356E – Best to Buy

The Shark Navigator NV356E offers well-rounded performance against all sorts of debris on both bare floor and carpetings thanks to its high suction power. A flexible design with the Lift-Away mechanism makes it an excellent vacuum for larger households with heavy vacuuming needs.

Miele Grey Classic C1 Pure Suction Canister Vacuum Cleaner

  • Balanced multi-floor performance
  • Great for pet hair cleaning
  • Lift-Away option
  • Long power cord
  • Large dust cup
  • HEPA

  • Non-retractable power cord
  • No mounting for the powered pet hair tool

The NV356E performs well on both bare floors and carpetings. On carpeting, the vacuum has little trouble combing through the thick piles and sucking out dirt, dust, and debris from the roots.

It can handle embedded dirt that’s worked deep into awkward nooks and crannies around the house. All you need to do is attach the crevice tool, which has a narrow suction hose to reach into these tight corners. For things that require a more delicate touch, such as upholstery (curtains, furniture) or car seats, the upholstery tool can help.

It also does well against pet hair and comes with a powered pet hair tool. Aside from being incredibly efficient against pet hair, it is also good at picking up small particles and debris.

The NV356E also performs quite well underneath furniture. You can detach the motor body from the rest of the vacuum to get the extra reach and mobility needed. The motorized rotating brush is disabled in this mode. If your furniture is on top of a carpeted floor, then its suction power may not have enough energy to scrub everything clean.

The NV356E weighs about 13.7 pounds (6.2 kilograms) with all parts assembled and 8 pounds (3.6 pounds) as the detached motor body and dust cup. It is still relatively lightweight for a full-sized vacuum, and most customers reported having little difficulty moving it around the house.

The power cord is 30 feet long, which is longer than the average cord length of uprights. The cord is not retractable, so you will have to wrap it around the vacuum after each use.

The vacuum has two cleaning modes that you can switch back and forth from, including position “I” that’s suited for bare floors and position “II” for carpetings. On position II, the motorized rotating brush is activated to scrub dirt, dust, and debris from the piles.

You can activate the Lift-Away mode with the push of a button. In this mode, the motor body and the canister detach from the rest of the vacuum’s assembly. The shedded weight will make the vacuum far more maneuverable and effective against dirt and dust collecting in hard-to-reach spaces like the ceiling or underneath furniture.

On the body of the vacuum are two mounts for you to store the crevice tool and the dusting brush. For reasons unknown, the powered pet hair tool doesn’t have a mount and must be stored separately.

Dust Cup and Filtration System

The vacuum has a 2-liter (70.4 ounces) dust cup, which is quite sizable even for an upright.

The NV356E is equipped with Shark’s patented Anti-Allergen Complete Seal tech. The sealing system ensures that the dirty air sucked into the vacuum is contained inside of the vacuum, with the only outgoing path being through the HEPA filtration system. This way, the polluted air won’t leak out of gaps in the vacuum and harm your health.

The HEPA filters in the NV356E are rated for 99.9% capture of particles between 0.3 to 10 microns, so it is effective not just against fine dust, molds, and pollen but also airborne bacteria and virions.

Tools and Warranty

The NV356E’s complete shipping package includes a crevice tool, a dusting brush, and a pet power brush. Additionally, you will also find a warranty card offering a 1-year limited warranty.

2. BISSELL CleanView 2252 – Best Value Upright Vacuum

Despite being one of the most affordable vacuums on the company’s portfolio, the Bissell CleanView 2252 packs an impressive level of cleaning performance. Alongside a relatively compact and maneuverable design, this vacuum carries excellent value for the marketed price.

Miele Grey Classic C1 Pure Suction Canister Vacuum Cleaner

  • Balanced multi-floor performance
  • Edge-to-edge cleaning
  • Great pet hair performance
  • Manual height adjustment
  • Steerable

  • Non-retractable power cord
  • Cheap build material
  • Non-HEPA

According to customer reviews, the CleanView 2252 does a fine job of collecting dust, dirt, and debris from both bare floors and carpetings. Its great multi-floor performance can be attributed to the unique Triple Action brush roll. The brush roll can loosen and lift embedded dirt far more efficiently than traditional brush designs.

The brush roll of the CleanView 2252 has a remarkable edge-to-edge cleaning feature, meaning the side edges of the brush roll still have suction. This ability comes in handy for picking up pet hair or dirt lodged at the foot of the baseboard.

The CleanView 2252 performs with distinction when it is pitched against pet hair. With the aid of the mini Pet TurboBrush tool, the vacuum can clean after several pets at once and has been favorably reviewed by pet owners for this reason.

The steerable head of the vacuum, combined with slender tool types like the crevice tool or the Pet TurboBrush will give you an easier time cleaning underneath furniture. You don’t have to bend low and strain your back to reach deep into or under furniture.

When fully assembled, the vacuum weighs 14.5 pounds (6.5 kilograms), which remains on the lighter side of an average full-sized vacuum. It’s also been reported to be fairly maneuverable with swivel steering, so you will have little trouble moving it around the house.

The cord is 25 feet long and cannot be automatically retracted.

The vacuum features a manual height adjusting knob to either raise or lower the brush head. You can use this feature when cleaning carpets because the height of the brush head relative to the carpets will ultimately decide the cleaning efficiency. Too close and there won’t be enough air to create high suction, too high, and the piles would block the suction flow from reaching the embedded dirt in the roots. You can use the knob to adjust for optimum height.

The single complaint about this vacuum is that a lot of people reported the building quality is quite cheap since the vacuum is made from light plastic. But since this is what enables the vacuum to maintain light poundage, if you prefer light weight above all, you may be able to forgive the CleanView 2252 for this flaw.

Dust Cup and Filtration

The dust cup’s capacity is 1 liter (33.8 ounces) and is relatively quick to fill up. You will find yourself having to empty it frequently, but fortunately, the emptying process is easy. The dust cup doesn’t make a mess and has a dirt ejecting mechanism to keep you from coming into direct contact with the dirty contents.

Although the in-built filtration system is robust and does an excellent job at filtering, it is not HEPA. The pre-motor filter consists of a foam filter and an active carbon filter. Both can be removed from the vacuum to be washed and reused when they get dirty. BISSELL claims that the post-motor filter is a “lifetime” filter, so you won’t have to replace it.

Tools and Warranty

The vacuum comes with five tools: the Pet TurboEraser tool, a brush-upholstery tool, a dusting brush, a crevice tool, and an extension wand.

The 3-year limited warranty period for this upright is remarkably long for a corded upright.

3. Eureka PowerSpeed NEU181 – Best Upright Vacuum for Pet Hair

The Eureka PowerSpeed NEU181 will be a fine, affordable choice if you often have to deal with hair or pet fur. High suction power and a lightweight design for easy maneuvering through the house aside, the included pet turbo tool is a massive plus for pet owners.

Miele Grey Classic C1 Pure Suction Canister Vacuum Cleaner

  • Great multi-floor performance
  • Excellent against pet hair
  • Suitable for cleaning upholstery
  • Large dust cup

  • Doesn’t have a cord rewind system
  • Non-HEPA

NEU181 has great performance against dirt and dust thanks to its high suction power and the integrated cyclonic technology.

The vacuum’s suction first draws dirty air into the cyclone chamber. A series of cyclones in the first stage of the chamber pull heavy dust particles to the bottom of the vacuum where it collects. When the air passes to the second stage, the cyclones will remove finer, smaller dust particles from the air stream. When the air reaches the filter, it’s mostly cleaned of dirt particles. The filter will sort out whatever’s still left in the air stream.

But pet hair is where this vacuum shines the brightest. With the pet turbo tool attached, it can make short work of strands or large clumps of pet hair on various surfaces around the house, including thick carpets.

Performance on delicate surfaces like upholstery is also favorably reviewed. The upholstery tool can keep leather, suede, and microfiber surfaces clean without damaging them.

Despite the high performance, the NEU181 still retains a lightweight and compact body. The entire machine weighs 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms). The machine is not very bulky, either, so for those with back pain or conditions that would make using a heavy vacuum difficult, this vacuum will serve you well.

The cord length is about 25 feet, which is suitable for most households. It doesn’t feature a retracting mechanism.

Unfortunately, this vacuum does not have a swivel steering head. Maneuverability may be impaired a little, but most customers don’t mind this omission and still find the vacuum very mobile.

Dust Cup and Filtration

The dust cup that the NEU181 comes with has a spacious maximum capacity of 4 liters (135.2 ounces). The dust cup will allow you to clean for several sessions before it needs to be emptied. For those with a large home or who have multiple pets with a lot of shedding, the high-capacity dust cup is a blessing.

The emptying process is simple, too. You only need to press a button, and the dirty contents will fall right out without you needing to touch it.

The vacuum has a two-stage filtration system. The pre-motor filter is made from foam and can be rewashed and reused. The filter is not HEPA, but for cleaning pet hair and everyday floor cleaning, it does a great job of keeping the air cleaner.

Tools and Warranty

It comes with four accessories: a crevice tool, a dusting brush, an upholstery tool, and an extension wand for cleaning in high places such as countertops and the ceiling.

The PowerSpeed NEU181 has a 2-year limited warranty period, activated from the date of purchase.

4. BISSELL Featherweight 2033 – Best Lightweight Upright Vacuum

Whether you prefer a lightweight vacuum or have medical conditions that would make operating a heavy vacuum difficult, the BISSELL Featherweight 2033 will be of interest to you. Light and compact with adequate cleaning performance to boot, it is among the more exceptional choices on the market for a lightweight upright vacuum.

Miele Grey Classic C1 Pure Suction Canister Vacuum Cleaner

  • Lightweight and compact
  • Convertible
  • Adequate cleaning performance for small jobs

  • Short power cord
  • Small dust cup
  • Non-HEPA

Because the design aim of the Featherlight 2033 is to be lightweight and compact rather than maximum performance, don’t expect it to distinguish itself performance-wise.

It will do okay for picking up light dirt and dust on bare floors and upholstery like couches and armchairs. For carpetings, the suction power will only be able to handle low-pile carpets and small rugs.

The 2033 handles bare tread and carpeted stairs very well. Its compactness is a big plus for stair cleaning. Unfortunately, unless you have electrical outlets alongside the stairs, then its short cord length can be a problem.

The entire vacuum weighs 2.6 pounds (1.17 kilograms). There are not a lot of vacuums that are lighter than this. As a result, the 2033’s portability is nearly unparalleled on the market.

The cord is relatively short at about 15 feet. Because of its limited range, it is only suitable for small houses or apartments. Although it may be tempting to plug the vacuum into an extension cord for more range, we advise against doing this. Vacuum cleaners are notoriously prone to malfunctions when they are plugged into extension cords, so it’s safer not to.

The 2033 is a convertible vacuum. The motor body and the dust cup can detach from the rest of the machine to become a handheld vacuum. This mode is useful for cleaning in high, and hard-to-reach places.

Dust Cup and Filtration

The dust cup is miniaturized in the name of compactness with a capacity of 0.67 liters (22.6 ounces). You may find yourself having to empty it fairly frequently.

The filter that the 2033 uses is not washable or reusable, nor is it HEPA-rated. You will have to purchase replacement filters from BISSELL every few months. Most reviews found the filter to be relatively good at its job and able to catch fine dust and dirt quite effectively.

Tools and Warranty

The 2033 is shipped with only two tools included: a crevice tool and a floor nozzle that can give you an easier time cleaning stairs.

The vacuum comes with a 2-year limited warranty.

5. Shark ION P50 – Best Upright Bagless Vacuum

The Shark ION P50 has a balanced focus on both usability and performance.

The P50 has a unique DuoClean brush, which incorporates a powerhead and two extra brush rolls for best performance against dust and dirt on both hardwood and carpetings.

Shark ION P50-IC162,Lightweight Cordless Upright Vacuum with HEPA Filter

  • Lightweight
  • Balanced multi-floor performance
  • DuoClean brush
  • Convertible
  • Long battery life
  • Replaceable battery
  • HEPA

  • DuoClean brush might scratch up floorboards
  • Lackluster tools

The P50 also has a highly maneuverable and flexible vacuum body. You can detach the motor body and the dust cup from the rest of the vacuum to clean in awkward, cramped spaces like the car. But the best thing about this cordless vacuum is the 50-minute battery pack, which will last you an entire whole-house cleaning session.

Customers regard suction power as powerful. The P50 maintains an equally impressive level of performance from bare floors to carpets. The transition between surface types is seamless since you only need to flick a button.

The DuoClean brush head does an excellent job of agitating and scooping up stubborn dust and dirt that’s lodged deep inside of carpetings. A small number of customers have noticed the stiff carpet rollers leaving hairline scratches on their hardwood floors. The problem doesn’t seem widespread and only happens to a small portion of the customer-base. If you notice the vacuum scratching up your floors, we recommend you contact Shark’s customer service for a replacement.

The ION P50 weighs 12 pounds (5.4 kilograms) when completely assembled, so it is on the lighter side of the upright market.

It also offers great versatility. You can detach the motor body and the dust cup from the rest of the vacuum for more flexibility and use it in stick vacuum mode. With the weight of most of the assembly shed, you will have a more delightful time cleaning stairs, the ceiling, or tight spaces without straining yourself. If you need a smaller vacuum, you can detach the suction wand and turn it into a handheld vacuum.

Battery Life

The ION P50 is equipped with a 28.8-volt Li-ion battery, which will net you about 50 minutes of cleaning time. The battery is removable, and if you need more cleaning time than what a single battery pack can give you, you can order an extra one from Shark and alternate them.

The battery can be charged when inside the vacuum or on a separate charging dock.

Dust Cup and Filtration

The dust cup is relatively small and will max out at 2 liters (67.6 ounces), but the dust cup is still adequate to last a full cleaning session. The dust cup can be opened through a trapdoor, and its content can be easily dumped with a bit of shaking.

The vacuum has Complete Anti-Allergen Seal, so the internal dust cup is airtight. Whatever dirt, dust, and allergens were sucked into the vacuum won’t leak through gaps in the vacuum. They will have to go through the dual-stage filtration system, consisting of a pre-motor washable foam filter and a post-motor non-washable HEPA filter

Tools and Warranty

The box includes three tools: an upholstery tool, a dusting brush, and a duster crevice tool.

A 5-year limited warranty covers the vacuum.

6. Oreck Commercial U2000RB1 – Best Commercial Upright Vacuum

The Oreck Commercial U2000RB1 is a notable product in the professional vacuum segment.

The vacuum has commercial-grade cleaning power with a sizable motor and is designed to be tough. It can handle continuous, daily operation without burning up, unlike household vacuums. But despite its impressive capability, the vacuum remains lightweight and flexible with the ability to lay flat onto the ground to clean underneath furniture. So although the U2000RB1 is aimed toward professionals, all of these features can be appealing even to the average consumers too.

Oreck Commercial,Professional Upright Vacuum Cleaner,U2000RB1

  • Commercial-grade cleaning performance
  • Lightweight and flexible
  • High-capacity dust bag
  • Easy dust bag replacement
  • HEPA-like filtration

  • Expensive dust bags
  • Short warranty

The commercial motor working in tandem with the motorized, double-helix brush can effectively clean up anything on bare floors and carpetings alike. The vacuum has a Certified Gold qualification from the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI).

The transition from bare floors to carpetings is simple and without fuss. The height of the brush is automatically adjusted with a patented Microsweep feature.

Though it is perfect as a floor-cleaning vacuum, it cannot do precise, small jobs like vacuuming upholstery. If you also need to clean upholstery, you will most likely have to get a small handheld vacuum as a companion to the U2000RB1.

The U2000RB1 is a bagged vacuum, so all of the dirt, dust, and debris that it captures is funneled into a disposable bag. It makes for a lighter and less bulky vacuum with all of the extra parts of a dust cup removed.

The vacuum weighs exactly 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms). As a result, the company has also gained recommendations from the Arthritis Foundation. A cord guard protects the power cord to keep it from being damaged and is incredibly long at 40 feet. You won’t need to switch outlets often as you move about the house as a result.

It is highly flexible and can be laid flat on the floor to reach deep underneath the furniture to draw out built-up dust and dirt there. The soft wheels help with maneuverability and will give you an easier time tugging it around.

Wrapped around the brush head is a non-marring bumper. It’s there to help protect the walls from being damaged if you were to bump into them by accident.

Dust Bag and Filtration

The dust bag that the U2000RB1 uses has three layers to ensure the contents remain inside and that it won’t be punctured by sharp objects. Each bag has a capacity of 10.3 liters (348.2 ounces).

A filtering system (Celoc Hypo-Allergenic Filtering System) is built into each bag. It will filter out dust and dirt, as well as biological particles like bacteria, mold, and mildew. The filtering system is quite close to a fully-fledged HEPA filtration system in terms of efficiency, capturing 99.5% of microscopic particles. Nonetheless, it is still shy of the HEPA standard of 99.9% by a tiny 0.4%.

Fortunately, the difference is small enough that allergy sufferers can still use the U2000RB1 to filter out allergens in the air to significant effect.

The Saniseal docking system instantly seals up the bag when you remove it from the vacuum. Bag changing is easier and less risky that way.

Tools and Warranty

The U2000RB1 does not include any extra tools and has a short 1-year limited warranty period.

Ideas on Where to Store Your Upright Vacuums

No matter how compact and lightweight manufacturers have tried to make their uprights in recent years, the average upright still has a substantial size. It is not uncommon for people to be stumped on the question of where to store the vacuum, especially if the dry, unattractive design that many uprights have messes up the aesthetic of your living space.

We have some tips to make answering this riddle a bit easier!

The Kitchen or Pantry

If your kitchen has a big, empty cabinet or a secluded corner, you can try and fit your upright there. Most kitchens are utilitarian with fridge, ovens, coffee makers, toasters, and so on lying everywhere, so a vacuum cleaner most likely won’t clash too much with the design.

If you have a spacious pantry, that’s even better. A pantry is dry and away from sunlight, so if you can, that’s the best place to store your upright in.

A Closet

If you have an unused closet or a closet that can be repurposed, try to fit your vacuum inside. Your brooms or tools, for example, can be stored elsewhere since they typically aren’t as bulky as an upright. Or they may still be able to fit around it.

Basement or Laundry Room

The basement or the laundry room is perfect. You don’t have to worry about aesthetics and can put the vacuum just about anywhere. But that’s only if you have a basement or a separate laundry room in the first place.

If you don’t, there’s still the garage.

The garage is the final place to consider. We don’t recommend it since it is usually pretty dusty and dirty. But if you genuinely have nowhere else to put your upright, the garage will do.

An upright has been the go-to vacuum for so many families for decades. We hope our buying guide and reviews have helped you find a new one for your household. Although there are plenty of best upright vacuums out there, our recommendations are the most exemplary. They will all serve you well, whatever your needs and expectations may be.
